In the SU(3) pure gauge theory the high temperature deconfinement phase transition is first order. At the transition the confined phase coexists with three distinct deconfined phases. The interfaces separating the various phases show universal critical behavior when the confined phase completely wets the deconfined-deconfined interfaces. The critical exponents of complete wetting are derived from an interface solution of a Z(3) symmetric effective theory for the Polyakov loop. When complete wetting occurs in the pure glue theory the deconfinement transition proceeds via domain wall splitting. When quarks are present wetting disappears and the standard bubble nucleation scenario applies.

We report preliminary results on the finite temperature behavior of SU(4) gauge theory with dynamical quarks in both the fundamental and two-index antisymmetric representations. This system is a candidate to present scale separation behavior, where fermions in different representations condense at different temperature or coupling scales. Our simulations, however, reveal a single finite-temperature phase transition at which both representations deconfine and exhibit chiral restoration. It appears to be strongly first order. We compare our results to previous single-representation simulations. We also describe a Pisarski-Wilczek stability analysis, which suggests that the transition should be first order.

There has been much recent interest in the finite-temperature effective potential of the standard model in the context of the electroweak phase transition. We review the calculation of the effective potential with particular emphasis on the validity of the expansions that are used. The presence of a term that is cubic in the Higgs condensate in the one-loop effective potential appears to indicate a first-order electroweak phase transition. However, in the high-temperature regime, the infrared singularities inherent in massless models produce cubic terms that are of the same order in the coupling. In this paper, we discuss the inclusion of an infinite set of these terms via the ring-diagram summation, and show that the standard model has a first-order phase transition in the weak coupling expansion.

In this work we study the spectrum of the lowest screening masses for Yang–Mills theories on the lattice. We used the SU(2) gauge group in (3 + 1) dmensions. We adopted the multiple exponential method and the so-called "variational" method, in order to detect possible excited states. The calculations were done near the critical temperature of the confinement-deconfinement phase transition. We obtained values for the ratios of the screening masses consistent with predictions from universality arguments. A Monte Carlo evolution of the screening masses in the gauge theory confirms the validity of the predictions.
