Coping style and ecstasy use motives as predictors of current mood symptoms in ecstasy users

Background & Objectives: The kynurenine pathway is involved in inflammatory diseases. Alterations of this pathway were shown in psychiatric entities as well. The aim of this study was to determine whether specific changes in kynurenine metabolism are associated with current mood symptoms in bipolar disorder. Methods: Sum scores of the Hamilton Depression Scale, Beck Depression Inventory, and Young Mania Rating Scale were collected from 156 bipolar individuals to build groups of depressive, manic and euthymic subjects according to predefined cut-off scores. Severity of current mood symptoms was correlated with activities of the enzymes kynurenine 3-monooxygenase (ratio of 3-hydroxykynurenine/ kynurenine), kynurenine aminotransferase (ratio of kynurenic acid/ kynurenine) and kynureninase (ratio of 3-hydroxyanthranilic acid/ 3-hydroxykynurenine), proxied by ratios of serum concentrations. Results: Individuals with manic symptoms showed a shift towards higher kynurenine 3-monooxygenase activity (χ2 = 7.14, Df = 2, p = .028), compared to euthymic as well as depressed individuals. There were no differences between groups regarding activity of kynurenine aminotransferase and kynureninase. Within the group of depressed patients, Hamilton Depression Scale and kynurenine aminotransferase showed a significant negative correlation (r = -0.41, p = .036), displaying lower metabolism in the direction of kynurenic acid. Conclusion: Depression severity in bipolar disorder seems to be associated with a decreased synthesis of putative neuroprotective kynurenic acid. Furthermore, higher kynurenine 3-monooxygenase activity in currently manic individuals indicates an increased inflammatory state within bipolar disorder with more severe inflammation during manic episodes. The underlying pathophysiological mechanisms of the different affective episodes could represent parallel mechanisms rather than opposed processes.

ObjectivePsychological factors contribute to bipolar disorder illness course, representing targets for psychological intervention. Research to date has focused on bipolar I disorder, extrapolating results to bipolar II disorder. The current study addresses this discrepancy by exploring cognitive and coping styles in patients diagnosed with bipolar I or II disorder.MethodsParticipants were recruited from the Sydney-based Black Dog Institute. Diagnoses were derived via the MINI International Neuropsychiatric Interview. Baseline cognitive and coping style measures were completed, and mood symptoms assessed over a 6-month period. Clinician-rated mood status was assessed at follow-up to determine the predictive utility of cognitive and coping styles.ResultsThe follow-up sample comprised 151 participants. Differential relationships between cognitive style, coping styles and mood symptoms emerged across the bipolar sub-types. Some key differences were that a broader set of negative cognitive styles were associated with bipolar II depression symptoms; while few relationships were observed between coping styles and bipolar II symptoms.ConclusionDifferences in cognitive and coping style relationships with symptom expression across bipolar I and II disorder may provide clinicians with fruitful guides for directing treatment interventions when relevant maladaptive styles are observed. Further exploration of differences in cognitive and coping styles in bipolar I and II disorder is warranted.

Abstract. The goal of the study was to explore event-related potential (ERP) differences during the processing of emotional adjectives that were evaluated as congruent or incongruent with the current mood. We hypothesized that the first effects of congruence evaluation would be evidenced during the earliest stages of semantic analysis. Sixty mood adjectives were presented separately for 1,000 ms each during two sessions of mood induction. After each presentation, participants evaluated to what extent the word described their mood. The results pointed to incongruence marking of adjective’s meaning with current mood during early attention orientation and semantic access stages (the P150 component time window). This was followed by enhanced processing of congruent words at later stages. As a secondary goal the study also explored word valence effects and their relation to congruence evaluation. In this regard, no significant effects were observed on the ERPs; however, a negativity bias (enhanced responses to negative adjectives) was noted on the behavioral data (RTs), which could correspond to the small differences traced on the late positive potential.
