The traditional role of radiology in the multidisciplinary approach to modern trauma care has been primarily diagnostic and noninvasive. With the advent of more sophisticated and faster imaging equipment, computed tomography has further entrenched its role as the workhorse of trauma imaging. However, the specialty has evolved over the years with various therapeutic techniques now part of the interventional radiology armamentarium. Several of these techniques have become essential for the management of critically ill trauma patients. This article provides an overview of the common imaging findings of vascular and solid organ trauma from head to toe and subsequent endovascular interventions in these critically ill trauma patients.

The management of paediatric trauma patients can be complex, involving a coordinated multidisciplinary approach. Paediatricians form an integral part of the trauma team and are often tasked with managing circulation. In this article, we will discuss the assessment of catastrophic haemorrhage and ‘circulation’ through the viewpoint of a paediatrician via a case discussion. This will include initial investigations and management, noting the time critical nature in identifying and stopping catastrophic haemorrhage. The discussion will comment on how to address hypovolaemic shock and touch on the role of imaging.

Fecal incontinence is a disorder that affects many women, particularly those that have been multiparous. Aside from the physical disability, this disorder affects the psychosocial aspect along with issues of self-confidence and self esteem. Sphincteroplasty for fecal incontinence is an operation that has been well described to address this problem and offers great success. However, there are many patients that suffer from pelvic organ prolapse concurrently, along with fecal incontinence. The pelvic organ prolapse is often amenable to surgical correction; however, many gynecologists prefer to fix this in a setting with minimal fecal contamination, thus obviating a joint and multidisciplinary approach with colorectal surgery. We present a series of 17 consecutive cases where a sphincteroplasty was performed, with or without a concomitant gynecological procedure for solid organ prolapse.

In the fourth chapter of the book “The economy of the common good”, the nature of economics as a science and research practices in their theoretical and empirical aspects are discussed. The author considers the processes of modeling, empirical verification of models and evaluation of research quality. In addition, the features of economic cognition and the role of mathematics in economic research are analyzed, including the example of relevant research in game theory and information theory.

This article focuses on the main contemplative principles of the ‘Heart Essence’ (sNying thig), a Tibetan Buddhist tradition that is characterized by a vision of non-duality and primordial wholeness. Due to this vision, which asserts an original reality that is not divided into perceiving subject and perceived object, the ‘Heart Essence’ advocates a contemplative practice that undermines the usual intuitions of temporality and enclosed selfhood. Hence, unlike the common principles of intentional praxis, such as deliberate concentration and gradual purification, the ‘Heart Essence’ affirms four contemplative principles of non-objectiveness, openness, spontaneity and singleness. As these principles transcend intentionality, temporality, and multiplicity, they are seen to directly disclose the nature of primordial awareness, in which the meanings of knowing and being are radically transformed. Therefore, the article will also consider the role of these non-dual contemplative principles in deeply changing our understanding of being and knowing alike.
