This article, a companion to the article by Philippe G. Ciarlet on the mathematical modelling of shells also in this issue of Acta Numerica, focuses on numerical issues raised by the analysis of shells.Finite element procedures are widely used in engineering practice to analyse the behaviour of shell structures. However, the concept of ‘shell finite element’ is still somewhat fuzzy, as it may correspond to very different ideas and techniques in various actual implementations. In particular, a significant distinction can be made between shell elements that are obtained via the discretization of shell models, and shell elements – such as the general shell elements – derived from 3D formulations using some kinematic assumptions, without the use of any shell theory. Our first objective in this paper is to give a unified perspective of these two families of shell elements. This is expected to be very useful as it paves the way for further thorough mathematical analyses of shell elements. A particularly important motivation for this is the understanding and treatment of the deficiencies associated with the analysis of thin shells (among which is the locking phenomenon). We then survey these deficiencies, in the framework of the asymptotic behaviour of shell models. We conclude the article by giving some detailed guidelines to numerically assess the performance of shell finite elements when faced with these pathological phenomena, which is essential for the design of improved procedures.

Abstract The geometrically exact nonlinear deflection of a beamshell is considered here as an extension of the formulation derived by Libai and Simmonds (1998, The Nonlinear Theory of Elastic Shells, Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, UK) to include deformation through the thickness of the beam, as might arise from transverse squeezing loads. In particular, this effect can lead to receding contact for a uniform beamshell resting on a smooth, flat, rigid surface; traditional shell theory cannot adequately such behavior. The formulation is developed from the weak form of the local equations for linear momentum balance, weighted by an appropriate tensor. Different choices for this tensor lead to both the traditional shell equations corresponding to linear and angular momentum balance, as well as the additional higher-order representation for the squeezing deformation. In addition, conjugate strains for the shell forces are derived from the deformation power, as presented by Libai and Simmonds. Finally, the predictions from this approach are compared against predictions from the finite element code abaqus for a uniform beam subject to transverse applied loads. The current geometrically exact shell model correctly predicts the transverse shell force through the thickness of the beamshell and is able to describe problems that admit receding contact.

Shape sensing is one of most crucial components of typical structural health monitoring systems and has become a promising technology for future large-scale engineering structures to achieve significant improvement in their safety, reliability, and affordability. The inverse finite element method (iFEM) is an innovative shape-sensing technique that was introduced to perform three-dimensional displacement reconstruction of structures using in situ surface strain measurements. Moreover, isogeometric analysis (IGA) presents smooth function spaces such as non-uniform rational basis splines (NURBS), to numerically solve a number of engineering problems, and recently received a great deal of attention from both academy and industry. In this study, we propose a novel “isogeometric iFEM approach” for the shape sensing of thin and curved shell structures, through coupling the NURBS-based IGA together with the iFEM methodology. The main aim is to represent exact computational geometry, simplify mesh refinement, use smooth basis/shape functions, and allocate a lower number of strain sensors for shape sensing. For numerical implementation, a rotation-free isogeometric inverse-shell element (isogeometric Kirchhoff–Love inverse-shell element (iKLS)) is developed by utilizing the kinematics of the Kirchhoff–Love shell theory in convected curvilinear coordinates. Therefore, the isogeometric iFEM methodology presented herein minimizes a weighted-least-squares functional that uses membrane and bending section strains, consistent with the classical shell theory. Various validation and demonstration cases are presented, including Scordelis–Lo roof, pinched hemisphere, and partly clamped hyperbolic paraboloid. Finally, the effect of sensor locations, number of sensors, and the discretization of the geometry on solution accuracy is examined and the high accuracy and practical aspects of isogeometric iFEM analysis for linear/nonlinear shape sensing of curved shells are clearly demonstrated.

An analysis of follower forces acting on shell structures is presented. Attention is focussed on the expressions of such forces as functions of the generalized displacements. Specific expressions for the follower forces are obtained, according to the order of magnitude of the strains and angles of rotation. For small strains the follower forces allow a decomposition into conservative and non-conservative components. This leads to the equations of dynamic stability of shell problems subjected to follower loads. The dynamic counterparts of Donnell-Mushtari-Vlasov stability equations are presented, by either retaining or omitting the prebuckling rotations.
