A dichlorido-bridged dinuclear dysprosium(III) single-molecule magnet [Dy2L2(<i>µ</i>-Cl)2(THF)2] has been made using a diamine-bis(phenolate) ligand, H2L. Magnetic studies show an energy barrier for magnetization reversal (<i>U</i>eff) around 1000 K. Exchange-biasing effect is clearly seen in magnetic hysteresis with steps up to 4 K. <i>Ab</i> initio calculations exclude the possibility of pure dipolar origin of this effect leading to the conclusion that super-exchange <i>via</i> the chloride bridging ligands is important.

A family LnIII4 clusters were successfully synthesized and structurally characterized. Magnetic studies show that Gd4 cluster displays magnetic refrigeration, while Dy4 cluster demonstrates two distinct slow magnetic relaxation processes.

Divalent lanthanide organometallics are well known highly reducing compounds usually used for single electron transfer reactivity and small molecule activation. Thus, their very reactive nature prevented for many years the study of their physical properties, such as magnetic studies on a reliable basis. In this article, the access to rare organometallic sandwich compounds of TmII with the cyclooctatetraenyl (Cot) ligand impacts on the use of divalent organolanthanide compounds as an additional strategy for the design of performing Single Molecule Magnets (SMM). Herein, the first divalent thulium sandwich complex with f13 configuration behaving as a Single Molecule Magnet in absence of DC field is highlighted.

Three Dy4 clusters based on a flexible and attractive Schiff base ligand HL have been synthesized, and they showed different tetranuclear core arrangements. Magnetic studies reveal that clusters 1–3 display distinct slow relaxation of magnetization.

Four new [2 × 2] square grid LnIII4 clusters were successfully synthesized by employing a multidentate chelating Schiff base ligand. Magnetic studies showed that cluster 1 displays a larger magnetocaloric effect (−ΔSm = 34.46 J kg−1 K−1 for ΔH = 7.0 T at 2.0 K), while 3 exhibits slow relaxation behavior under a zero dc field, with ΔE/kB of 42.76 K and τ0 of 1.02 × 10−6 s.
