Locating a new industrial area involves a strategic decision that covers several criteria with consideration for socio-economic benefits and environmental sustainability alongwith technical, and political issues. These different criteria are described using a number of indicators in terms of quantity and quality with some possible uncertainty. Decision making thus requires appropriate tools for data collection, analysis and knowledge management to address this multidisciplinary situation. This paper tries to find out the comprehensive method for industrial site location, a sustainable approach for finding the most suitable solution. Identifying the location determinants and site suitability models used for allocating an industrial site is observed to be an essential aspect of siting of industry, as such; level of decision making is dependent on predefined constraints. Multicriteria decision making method (M.C.D.M) seems to be a consistent and efficient solution which forms the basis for locating multiple sites for industrial activity in any delineated area.

Site location is very important factor for a supermarket’s operation. This paper proposed a location model based on business area theory, and three cases, including Wal-Mart, Carrefour and Metro in Xi’an are compared to indicate the model is useful and feasible. The finding may provide direction to new supermarket’s location decision.

Based on the protection cost method, shadow engineering method, and some other discounting methods, the economic losses caused by the environmental damage was equivalent to specific monetary value. And put these methods into the environmental evaluation problems of Xibao railway line construction. After application, it plays an important role in the multi-objective railway location decision-making.

This study focuses on developing a model for making retail location decisions which addresses the limitations of existing methods. The integrated DEMATEL-ANP method used here successfully accounts for interdependencies between the selected criteria. After reviewing the existing methods for decision making, the Decision Making Trial and Evaluation (DEMATEL) and the Analytical Network Process (ANP) methods were chosen. DEMATEL evaluates the degrees of influence the criteria have on each other. ANP is used to assign weights to criteria and the sub-criteria, and eventually derive the weights for the alternative locations. The integrated model helps prioritize among the available alternatives based on scientific methods, much more reliable than intuition and experience based methods still practiced today. Adopting this method can help retail chains make more informed decisions. This is the first time an integrated DEMATEL-ANP method has been applied in the context of retail location decision.
