This work presents an investigation on the free vibration behavior of rotating pre-twisted functionally graded graphene platelets reinforced composite (FG-GPLRC) laminated blades/beams with an attached point mass. The considered beams are constituted of [Formula: see text] layers which are bonded perfectly and made of a mixture of isotropic polymer matrix and graphene platelets (GPLs). The weight fraction of GPLs changes in a layer-wise manner. The effective material properties of FG-GPLRC layers are computed by using the modified Halpin-Tsai model together with rule of mixture. The free vibration eigenvalue equations are developed based on the Reddy’s third-order shear deformation theory (TSDT) using the Chebyshev–Ritz method under different boundary conditions. After validating the approach, the influences of the GPLs distribution pattern, GPLs weight fraction, angular velocity, the variation of the angle of twist along the beam axis, the ratio of attached mass to the beam mass, boundary conditions, position of attached mass, and geometry on the vibration behavior are investigated. The findings demonstrate that the natural frequencies of the rotating pre-twisted FG-GPLRC laminated beams significantly increases by adding a very small amount of GPLs into polymer matrix. It is shown that placing more GPLs near the top and bottom surfaces of the pre-twisted beam is an effective way to strengthen the pre-twisted beam stiffness and increase the natural frequencies.

Based on the hyperbolic tangent shear deformation theory, free vibration and sound insulation of two different types of functionally graded (FG) honeycomb sandwich plates with negative Poisson’s ratio are studied in this paper. Using Hamilton’s principle, the vibration and vibro-acoustic coupling dynamic equations for FG honeycomb sandwich plates with simply supported edges are established. By applying the Navier’s method and fluid–solid interface conditions, the derived governing dynamic equations are solved. The natural frequencies and the sound insulation of FG honeycomb sandwich plates obtained in this work are compared with the numerical results by the finite element simulation. It is proven that the theoretical models for the free vibration and the sound insulation are accurate and efficient. Moreover, FG sandwich plates with different honeycomb cores are investigated and compared. The corresponding results show that the FG honeycomb core with negative Poisson’s ratio can yield much lower frequencies. Then, the influences of various geometrical and material parameters on the vibration and sound insulation performance are systematically analyzed.

The present paper investigates the free vibration analysis for functionally graded material plates of linearly varying thickness. A non-polynomial higher order shear deformation theory is used, which is based on inverse hyperbolic shape function for the tapered FGM plate. Three different types of material gradation laws, specifically: a power (P-FGM), exponential (E-FGM), and sigmoid law (S-FGM) are used to calculate the property variation in the thickness direction of FGM plate. The variational principle has been applied to derive the governing differential equation for the plates. Non-dimensional frequencies have been evaluated by considering the semi-analytical approach viz. Galerkin-Vlasov’s method. The accuracy of the preceding formulation has been validated through numerical examples consisting of constant thickness and tapered (variable thickness) plates. The findings obtained by this method are found to be in close agreement with the published results. Parametric studies are then explored for different geometric parameters like taper ratio and boundary conditions. It is deduced that the frequency parameter is maximum for S-FGM tapered plate as compared to E- and P-FGM tapered plate. Consequently, it is concluded that the S-FGM tapered plate is suitable for those engineering structures that are subjected to huge excitations to avoid resonance conditions. In addition, it is found that the taper ratio is significantly affected by the type of constraints on the edges of the tapered FGM plate. Some novel results for FGM plate with variable thickness are also computed that can be used as benchmark results for future reference.
