In this paper, we consider the problem on a transverse impact of a viscoelastic sphere upon a viscoelastic shallow doubly curved shell with rectangular platform, the viscoelastic features of which are defined via the fractional derivative standard linear solid models; in so doing, only Young’s time-dependent operators are preassigned, while the bulk moduli are considered to be constant values, since the bulk relaxation for the majority of materials is far less than the shear relaxation. Shallow panel’s displacement subjected to the concentrated contact force is found by the method of expansion in terms of eigen functions, and the sphere’s displacement under the action of the contact force, which is the sum of the shell’s displacement at the place of contact and local bearing of impactor and target’s materials, is defined from the equation of motion of the material point with the mass equal to sphere’s mass. Within the contact domain, the contact force is defined by the modified Hertzian contact law with the time-dependent rigidity function. For decoding the viscoelastic operators involving the problem under consideration, the algebra of Rabotnov’s fractional operators is employed. A nonlinear integro-differential equation is obtained either in terms of the contact force or in the local bearing of the target and impactor materials. Using the duration of contact as a small parameter, approximate analytical solutions have been found, which allow one to define the key characteristics of impact process.

We present a methodology for automated forming of metal plates into freeformshapes using shot peening. The methodology is based on a simulation softwarethat computes the peening pattern and simulates the effect of its application. The pattern generation requires preliminary experimental characterizationof the treatment. The treatment is applied by a shot peening robot. The program for the robot is generated automatically according to the peening pattern. We validate the methodology with a series of tests. Namely, we form nine aluminum plates into doubly curved shapes and we also shape model airplane wing skins. The article describes the complete workflow and the experimental results.

An analytical investigation on the nonlinear response of doubly curved panels constructed from homogeneous face sheets and carbon nanotube reinforced composite (CNTRC) core and subjected to external pressure in thermal environments is presented in this paper. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are reinforced into the core layer through uniform or functionally graded distributions. The properties of constituents are assumed to be temperature dependent and effective properties of CNTRC are determined using an extended rule of mixture. Governing equations are established within the framework of first order shear deformation theory taking into account geometrical imperfection, von Kármán–Donnell nonlinearity, panel-foundation interaction and elasticity of tangential edge restraints. These equations are solved using approximate analytical solutions and Galerkin method for simply supported panels. The results reveal that load carrying capacity of sandwich panels is stronger when boundary edges are more rigorously restrained and face sheets are thicker. Furthermore, elevated temperature has deteriorative and beneficial influences on the load bearing capability of sandwich panels with movable and restrained edges, respectively.

Due to the excellent mechanical properties of doubly curved structure and functionally graded porous (FGP) material, the study of their vibration characteristics has attracted wide attention. The main aim of this research is to establish a formulation for free and forced vibration analysis of a new Sandwich FGP doubly curved structure. Four models of Sandwich materials are considered. The potential energy and kinetic energy functions are obtained on the foundation of the first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT). The idea of domain energy decomposition is applied to the theoretical modeling, where the structure is segmented along the generatrix direction. The continuity conditions for the interfaces between adjacent segments are balanced by the weighted parameters. For each segment, the displacement functions are selected as the Jacobi orthogonal polynomials and trigonometric series. The boundary conditions of the structure are obtained by the boundary spring simulation technique. The solution is obtained by the variational operation of the structural functional. The convergence performance and correctness of the theoretical model are examined by several numerical examples. Finally, some novel results are given, where free and forced vibration characteristics of Sandwich FGP doubly curved structures are examined in detail.

The urgency of global climate emergency has drawn significant attention to the building industry over the last few years. Today, the building sector is responsible for 38% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions, according to UNEP. 60% -70% of embodied carbon in a conventional column-beam reinforced concrete building is in its floor system. This paper discusses the possibility of constructing an earthen slab system using mud-concrete. It investigates a doubly curved shell structure, working predominantly in compression, to fulfil both environmental and economical demands in the construction industry; reducing the cost and labour expenses nearly 50% compared with that of traditional reinforced concrete slab systems. A 1 m x 1 m prototype mud-concrete slab was constructed to check the potential for modular construction with a square footprint. Poured mud-concrete shell of 50 mm thickness is the primary structural component, while a non-structural mud-concrete filling to a horizontal level 50 mm from apex was used to create a usable floor surface. Masonry mould method was used as the formwork system for the construction considering its cost effectiveness and ease of construction.
