IntroductionMore than a thousand million people live with a certain type of disability over the world (more than a 15% of the population worldwide). In Spain, 2.5 millions of people suffer from a physical disability. Disability can be understood as an interaction of the individual's health condition (disease, illness…) and his/her environmental and personal factors. Resilience could be included as a powerful personal factor, which would play a major role in the individual's quality of life. Resilience can be defined as a universal basic capacity to prevent, minimize or overcome life's adversities, even reaching a change in the life of the individual.AimTo determine the association among resilience, pain and quality of life in people with physical disabilities.Materials and methodsAn electronic search of several databases (Psycinfo, Medline, Pubmed…) was performed using the terms resilience, physical disability, and physical illness among others. Results– Pain and resilience show an important relationship. Factors as acceptance, pain beliefs and self-efficacy are directly related with a lower pain interference.– Resilience and quality of life show a strong positive relationship.ConclusionSeveral factors are related to resilience in people with physical disabilities. Resilience seems to be an important capacity that helps individual with physical disabilities overcome adversities. Further analyses are required.Disclosure of interestThe author has not supplied his/her declaration of competing interest.

Quality of life in disabilities: CrossFit adapted for wheelchair users and amputees.BACKGROUND: The quality of life of people with disabilities is associated with the condition of well-being, even in the face of the limiting or restrictive conditions they have. Thus, adapted physical exercise requires the promotion of some strategies to stimulate capacities and has great importance for the individual, whether in the discovery of new skills or in the rehabilitation of functions.OBJECTIVE: When entering the universe of a CrossFit box, the objective was to get to know the practice offered to a group of people with physical disabilities (users of wheelchairs and amputees) in order to identify in practice the benefits they can present while exercising.METHODS: We sought in the specialized literature subsidies for the discussion and description of the results obtained, through the monitoring of a group practicing the sport, with photographic records of the training and reports of the participants. RESULTS: It was noted the improvement in self-esteem of participants, the rediscovery of functions in individuals in rehabilitation, and the importance of socialization between people with and without disabilities.CONCLUSION: It was found how valid the practice is for the group that seeks better conditioning, in addition to contributing to psychological and social aspects essential to the quality of life and, consequently, to the healthy coexistence of people with disabilities in sports and in society.

Objective: to identify and systematize — in the literature available in computer databases (LILACS and MEDLINE) — studies on the quality of life of people with physical disabilities from spinal cord injury in the period from 1994 to 2004. Methods: this is a descriptive and exploratory study, in which a bibliographic review was performed. The following descriptors were used: people with physical disabilities, handicapped people, spinal cord injuries, quality of life, nursing and nursing care, and 27 articles were found, which comprised the sample for the study. Results: the topics of the articles encountered were the following: well-being of individuals with spinal cord injury; the rehabilitation process; life satisfaction; performance of physical activities and life expectancy. The study indicated an overall lack of publications in the field of nursing, as well as in methodological aspects. It was found that, although improving the life quality of patients with spinal cord injury is extremely important, there is a scarcity of studies on this subject, and it should be further investigated and discussed. Conclusion: therefore, it is important to include an understanding of the subjectivity of individuals with spinal cord injury and their perception on quality of life, aimed at improving nursing care. Descriptors: quality of life; people with disabilities; spinal cord; health of disabled or incapacitated people

Physical disability has a profound effect on one's quality of life, social intercourse and emotional well-being. Loneliness has been found to be a frequent companion of those afflicted with chronic illnesses that result in physical disabilities. This study examined the qualitative aspects of that loneliness. Five hundred and ninety-three participants volunteered to answer a 30-item yes/no questionnaire. Those with physical disabilities were compared to the nondisabled (general population), and then further divided into five homogeneous subgroups (i.e., those with multiple sclerosis, osteoporosis, Parkinson's, arthritis, and “other” disabilities) which were compared to each other and to the general population sample who are healthy and not chronically ill. Results indicate that the loneliness of those with physical disabilities differs significantly from that of the general population.

Freedom of movement is an essential component of independence and mobility is closely associated with quality of life. People who have difficulty with independent walking often require a wheelchair to assist with mobility. The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health model can be used to guide the provision of wheelchairs and seating through consideration of the individual personal factors and preferences, environmental limitations, the person’s desired activities and participation in life roles, as well as the person’s health condition or impairments of body structure and function. This chapter describes the steps in prescribing a wheelchair, types of manual and powered wheelchairs, and specialized seating and positioning components.
