Annie is a medium-early winter wheat developed at the Plant Breeding Station, Stupice, SELGEN, a.s., Czech Republic and registered in the Czech Republic in 2014. In the Official Variety Trials this variety showed very high baking quality class E combined with higher grain yield than in the check variety Akteur with similar grain quality. It carries Pch1 gene conferring resistance to eyespot and possesses combined resistance to most diseases together with excellent frost resistance.

Preplant irrigation can impact fertilizer management in winter wheat. The objective of this study was to evaluate the main and interactive effects of preplant irrigation, N fertilizer application timing, and different N, P, and K fertilizer treatments on grain yield and WUE. Several significant two-way interactions and main effects of all three factors evaluated were observed over four growing seasons for grain yield and WUE. These effects could be described by differences in rainfall and soil moisture content among years. Overall, grain yield and WUE were optimized, if irrigation or adequate soil moisture were available prior to planting. For rain-fed treatments, the timing of N fertilizer application was not as important and could be applied before planting or topdressed without much difference in yield. The application of P fertilizer proved to be beneficial on average years but was not needed in years where above average soil moisture was present. There was no added benefit to applying K fertilizer. In conclusion, N and P fertilizer management practices may need to be altered yearly based on changes in soil moisture from irrigation and/or rainfall.

The report compares costs of wheat production in the European Union and selected world producers. International comparison of wheat production costs has been prepared on the basis of the results of an international network of Agri benchmark Cash Crop for the years 2010–2012, which is organized by Johan Heinrich von Thünen – Institute (VTi) in Germany. Czech Republic is since the year 2008 an official member this network and is represented by the Institute of Agricultural Economics and Information (hereinafter IAEI). The results for the Czech Republic, which are then shared with other participating countries (institutions), are based upon the special investigation of IAEI. International comparison is based on typical farms taking into account regional structure of produced crops, technological and operating procedures, utilization of inputs, size of a farm, and other specifications. The concept of international comparisons is based on the (so called) “typical farms”, which take into account the typical size and structure, the area of market crops, technology and work practices, use of inputs and their quantity, production and other requirements of agricultural production characteristic of the given issues. Production costs are structured as direct and operating. Overall economy evaluations of wheat production also include effect of subventions. The position of the Czech Republic within the European Union is also discussed.
