Abstract Multilateral technology has for nearly three decades extended the production life of fields in the North Sea by delivering a higher recovery factor supported by the cumulative production of the multiple laterals. Additionally, operators continue to look at methods to reduce the environmental impact of drilling and intervention. Taking advantage of the latest multilateral technology can turn otherwise unviable reservoirs into economically sound targets by achieving a longer field life while minimizing construction costs, risk, and environmental impact. This paper will focus on mature fields in the region that have used multilateral applications for wells that were reaching the end of their life and have been extended to further economic production. This paper discusses challenges faced to provide a multilateral solution for drilling new lateral legs in existing wells where there is a lack of available slots to drill new wells. Additionally, discussion will cover completion designs that tie new laterals into existing production casing. The case study will include discussion of workover operations, isolation methods, and lateral creation systems. The paper focuses on the challenges, solutions, and successful case study of a retrofit multilateral well constructed in the North Sea which extended production life in a mature field by using innovative multilateral re-entry methods. The paper also provides insight as to methodology for continually improving reliability of multilateral installations to maximize efficiencies.

Abstract Background: This article presents a single case study on the development of a GIS for global monitoring of coronavirus (COVID-19). For such concepts presented about GIS, its use and evolution in epidemic events and a presentation of the context of the current coronavirus outbreak and the meaningless results of consolidating a panel with reliable data.Methods: A single case study of a GIS in continuous development with data sharing and comments from the scientific community was carried out. Because it is not a post-mortem analysis, or a follow-up to a successful case, it was not possible to use more rigorous and systematic approaches such as those used by Lee (1989) and Onsrud, Pinto and Azad (1992) for case studies in GIS.Results: The case study presents the results of the development of a control dashboard, as well as the availability of consolidated data made by researchers at Johns Hopkins University and who showed a reliable platform and a world reference for health comunity.Conclusions: Efforts to develop a dashboard and provide data on the coronavirus outbreak resulted in the immediate replication of several other information systems with different approaches (Power BI, R, Tableau), becoming a reference for any new global epidemic outbreak events.

AbstractThis article explores a missing link in the recent literature on the formation of social policies: that between democracy and universalism, one desirable yet elusive feature of these policies. We base our argument on a case study of Costa Rica, the most successful case of universalism in Latin America. We proceed by first depicting Costa Rica's peculiar policy architecture, based on the incremental expansion of benefits funded on payroll taxes. Then we reconstruct the policy process to stress the key role played by technopoliticians in a democratic context. Backed by political leadership and equipped with international ideas, technopoliticians drove social policy design from agenda setting to adoption and implementation. Third, we argue that key aspects of the policy architecture established in the early 1940s were fundamental building blocks for a distinctive and seldom explored road to universalism. We conclude considering contemporary implications.

Abstract Short wavelength probing (SWP) uses wavelengths of light shorter than 1100 nm or energies higher than silicon bandgap for laser probing applications. While SWP allows a significant improvement to spatial resolution, there are aberrations to the collected laser probing waveforms which result in difficulties in signal interpretations. In this work, we assess the signals collected through SWP (785 nm) and introduce a photodiode model to explain the observations. We also present a successful case study using 785 nm for failure analysis in sub-20 nm FinFET technology.

The purpose of this chapter is to describe a successful case study of evaluation and learning transfer in a Global CRO (ICON) located in Dublin, Ireland. The case study focuses on a management development program entitled Management Essentials Two. The evaluation element of the exercise engaged the theories of Kirkpatrick and Phillips as a fundamental approach. The outcomes of the program that were measured included Levels one, two and three of both models. Post program behavior change was selected as a measure of transfer. In a departure from standard evaluation practice the case study employed an original inventory, “System of Training Transfer Assessment Report” (STAR), to measure the factors leading to transfer (Donovan & Darcy, 2011). Regression analysis was used to identify four factors that were critical to transfer of learning at ICON. Lessons for ICON, practitioners, and researchers are drawn.
