A retrospective study covered the period of 10-year (2000-2010) to investigate the prevalence of hydatidosis in ruminants of three provinces abattoirs in Iraq (Al Muthanna, Al Qadysiah and Al Najaf). A total of 923391 animals including 424167 sheep, 163070 goats, 264351 cow, 33133 buffalo and 38670 camel, inspected macroscopically for hydatidosis in 10-year period, out of which 9909, 2250, 6387, 740 and 414 respectively were infected with hydatidosis. The incidence of the disease in all slaughtered animals varied according to the province, but in general, Al Muthanna province recorded the highest incidence among all slaughtered species followed by Al Qadysiah then Al Najaf province. Buffalo recorded the highest incidence percentage (5.5%) in Al Muthanna and sheep (3.8%) in AlQadysiah while in AL Najaf cow showed the highest incidence (2.1%). The current results provide a baseline data for the prevalence of this parasitic disease in these three provinces and its incidence among different species of ruminants, which provide the opportunity for future monitoring and evaluation leading to control programs of hydatid cyst in Iraq.

The aim of this retrospective study was to review pleural complications and results of surgical management of patient with hydatid disease. Between 2000 and 2010, 34 patients among 260 patients with hydatid disease, were diagnosed with pleural complications. Findings are presented in relative frequencies tables. The most common pleural complication was empyema in 9 patients. The most common procedure was cystotomy, evacuation and decortication in 25 patients. In endemic area, pleural complications of hydatid cyst should be considered for differential diagnosis. And because of higher morbidity and mortality, surgical treatment should be carried out before complications.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3126/ijls.v8i4.10893

Abstract Background: Hepatic hydatid cyst is an endemic parasitosis in Tunisia. Although most of these cysts are benign; their treatment may lead to several complications which can cause an important post-operative morbidity and mortality. The purpose of the present paper is to assess the morbidity and mortality specifics risk factors of hepatic hydatid cysts after conservative surgery. Methods: We conducted a retrospective study of 102 patients over a period of 13 years, from 2006 to 2019. We included all patients operated on for hydatid cyst of the liver, complicated and uncomplicated, in the Department of General Surgery of Mahdia, Tunisia. We excluded patients who received an exclusive medical treatment and those who have other hydatic cyst localizations.Descriptive statistics, bivariate analysis using chi-squared test and Fisher’s exact test for categorical variables;t-test,ANOVA , and Kruskal–Wallis for continuous variables; odds ratio calculations, ordinal and multivariate logistic regression models were appliedResults: The cohort was composed of 102 patients with a total of 151 cysts operated on using conservative surgery, among them there was 75 women (73, 5%) and 27 men (26.5%). The median age was 43, with extremes ranging from 12 to 88 years. The majority of patients (94. 1%) were from rural areas. The cysts were uncomplicated in about half of the cases (48%), elsewhere complications such as compression of neighboring organs (25,5%), opening in the bile ducts (16,7%), infection (9,8%), and rupture in the peritoneum (2%) were found. Conservative surgery was the mainstay of treatment with an overall mortality rate of 1. 9%. The overall morbidity rate was 22%: 14% specific morbidity and 8% non-specific morbidity. External biliary fistula was the most common postoperative complication (9%). The predictive factors of morbidity in univariate analysis were Preoperative hydatid cyst infection (P = 0.01), Compressive cysts (P=0.05), preoperative fever and jaundice, (respectively P=0. 03 and P=0. 02), no one achieved statistical significance in the multivariate modelConclusions:Preoperative hydatid cyst infection, compressive cysts and preoperative fever and jaundice are significant predictor factors of morbidity after conservative surgery for liver hydatid cyst. They must be considered in the treatment and the surgical decision for patients with hydatid cyst.

Introduction: Hydatid disease is endemic in sheep and cattle-raising areas worldwide. Its prevalence is high in Nepal. The study was carried out to determine the clinical, radiological and pathological presentations of hydatid disease. Methods: This was a retrospective study of all hydatid disease cases reported in Department of Pathology, from August 1996 to July 2010. All the clinical, radiological and pathological data were collected and collated. Results: A total of 51 cases of hydatidosis were studied. Patients presented with related symptoms in 47 cases, 92.16% with CI (84.78, 99.54) and asymptomatic in four cases, 7.84% with CI (0.46, 15.22). Involvement of liver and lung was found in 35 (68.63%) cases and 10 (19.61%) cases respectively. Involvement of other organs like kidney, pelvis and broad ligament were seen in 6 of the cases. Total 29 cases, 56.86% with CI (43.2, 70.46) had solitary cyst while rest of the cases had multiloculated cyst. All cases had radiological correlation and histopathological confirmation. Conclusions: Most cases presented with organ related vague symptoms, however it should be considered as a differential diagnosis especially in asymptomatic cases and cases with unusual sites. Imaging studies is useful in preoperative diagnosis and postoperative histopathology is confirmatory. A multicentric hospital based study will help to decrease the incidence._______________________________________________________________________________________Keywords: echinoccocus; hydatid cyst; hydatidosis.
