This paper studies the application of Dynamic Bayesian Networks (DBNs) for modeling degradation processes in oil and gas pipelines. A DBN tool consisting of a matlab code has been developed for performing inference on models. The tool is then applied for probabilistic modeling of the burst pressure of a pipe subjected to corrosion degradation and for safety assessment. The burst pressure is evaluated using the ASME B31G design method and other empirical formulas. A model for corrosion prediction in pipelines and its governing parameters are explicitly included into the probabilistic framework. Different sets of simulated corrosion measurements are used to increase the accuracy of the model predictions. Several parametric studies are conducted to investigate how changes in the observed corrosion (depth and length) and in the frequency of inspections affect the pipe reliability.

This article presents a simplified, integrated method for design studies of blades for offshore wind turbines. The method applies to variable speed horizontal axis wind turbines with pitch control, and allows designing the rotor blades based on a very limited set of input parameters. The purpose of the method is to allow parametric studies of different design configurations of the rotor at a reasonable effort. The resulting wind turbine models are at a level of detail suitable for preliminary design considerations using e.g. aero-elastic simulations in the time domain. The aerodynamic design is based on blade element momentum (BEM) considerations using a distribution of 2D airfoil characteristics. The structural design of the blades is based on aerodynamic forces calculated from a small number of load cases. The design procedure is facilitated by using simplified cross-section definitions and iterative approaches. The resulting blade designs are shown to compare well with data from available turbine models.

An integrated design method for a high-precision/speed servomechanism including interactions of mechanical and electrical subsystems is proposed in this article. On the basis of the multiobjective optimization method, a non-linear optimal design procedure of the mechanical subsystem is performed simultaneously through the design process of the electrical subsystem satisfying the desired performance. Mechanical and electrical constraints have been formulated according to design requirements. Both mechanical and electrical parameters are considered as design variables. Validity of the integrated design problem is verified on the different application areas. Parametric studies of the design variables have also been conducted in this article. Case studies show that the integrated design method for an x-y positioning system satisfies the desired high-precision/speed performance.
