AbstractMetal nanocluster-glass composites demonstrate unique optical properties and significant nonlinear response. In this work nanometer dimension metal colloids were formed in silica by sequential implantation of Ag and Cu ions. The Ag and Cu were implanted with relative ratios of Ag to Cu of 9:3,6:6, and 3:9 at a total nominal dose of 12xl016 ions/cm2. TEM techniques were used to examine colloid size and size distributions. The linear optical response was measured from 200 to 900 nm, while the nonlinear optical properties were measured using the z-scan technique at a wavelength of 570 nm. The linear and nonlinear optical properties were found to be dependent upon the ratio of sequentially implanted Ag to Cu and are consistent with effective medium theory.

Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) has been used to characterize the surface roughness of nonlinear optical (NLO) polymers. A review of STM of polymer surfaces is included in this volume. The NLO polymers are instrumental in the development of electrooptical waveguide devices, the most fundamental of which is the modulator. The most common modulator design is the Mach Zehnder interferometer, in which the input light is split into two legs and then recombined into a common output within the two dimensional waveguide. A π phase retardation, resulting in total light extinction at the output of the interferometer, can be achieved by changing the refractive index of one leg with respect to the other using the electrooptic effect. For best device performance, it is essential that the NLO polymer exhibit minimal surface roughness in order to reduce light scattering. Scanning tunneling microscopy, with its high lateral and vertical resolution, is capable of quantifying the NLO polymer surface roughness induced by processing. Results are presented below in which STM was used to measure the surface roughness of films produced by spin-coating NLO-active polymers onto silicon substrates.

The nonlinear optical properties of pepper oil are studied by diffraction ring patterns and Z-scan techniques with continuous wave beam from solid state laser at 473 nm wavelength. The nonlinear refractive index of the sample is calculated by both techniques. The sample show high nonlinear refractive index. Based on Fresnel-Kirchhoff diffraction integral, the far-field intensity distributions of ring patterns have been calculated. It is found that the experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical results. Also the optical limiting property of pepper oil is reported. The results obtained in this study prove that the pepper oil has applications in nonlinear optical devices.
