Spirituality is a key element of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) recovery. However, little is known about the potential religious and secular sources of spiritual experiences in AA fellowship. The aim of the study was to verify if in a sample of AA participants, meaning in life mediates the relationship between their religiousness and spiritual experiences, as well as between their involvement in AA and spiritual experiences. The study sample consisted of 70 Polish AA participants, and the following tools were used: the Alcoholics Anonymous Involvement Scale (AAIS); Santa Clara Strength of Religious Faith Questionnaire (SCSORFQ); Purpose in Life Test (PIL); two one-item measures regarding frequency of prayer and Mass attendance; and the Daily Spiritual Experiences Scale (DSES) duration of AA participation, which was positively related to involvement in addiction self-help groups and religiousness. Involvement in AA and religiousness were positively related to meaning in life, which in turn positively correlated with spiritual experiences. This research indicated that in a sample of AA participants, finding meaning in life partially mediates the relationship between religiousness and spiritual experiences, as well as fully mediating the relationship between involvement in AA and spiritual experiences. The theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

In order to provide a background for subsequent discussions, the chapter introduces the notion of the “new self-help movement” in Norway. The 1980s and 90s saw the establishment of self-help groups that differed from more traditional approaches, such as Alcoholics Anonymous and other 12-step groups. The new self-help movement, we argue, cannot be understood independently of broader social developments. The chapter, therefore, discusses the self-help movement in light of recent welfare reforms and processes of individualization more generally. Developments in the new Norwegian self-help movement is part of a larger, international trend. Internationally, as well as in Norway, new self-help groups increasingly have a psychological and therapeutic orientation. Our aim, however, is not to contribute to the growing literature on causes and effects of the “therapeutic” or “self-help culture”. Rather, our interest lies in collective, group-based forms of self-help. We argue that the context for group-based self-help activities has changed, and that this, in turn, changes the content and form of contemporary self-help groups and movements. We then proceed to introduce the theoretical framework on which the various contributions draw, and, finally, to introduce the various contributions.

The general psychiatrist and the addiction specialist have a shared agenda of concerns and interests about the misuse of alcohol. The task of this paper is to highlight and develop thoughts on items for inclusion on the shared agenda, rather than to define, or limit in any other way, how the generalist role might unfold in a particular place at a particular time. It is certain that the general psychiatrist will see a role that is more than just signposting their own specialist colleagues, local counselling services, or self-help groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous, but opinion on just how broad that role could or should be will vary considerably. One point of difference may be a mismatch of views as to where patients with alcohol misuse problems are best treated: the general psychiatrist seeing alcohol misuse, or even dependence, as having little to do with general psychiatry and belonging within a specialist service, the specialist seeing alcohol misuse as very much part of the every day work of the general psychiatrist. Happily both positions can be correct, but not totally and not without dialogue.

This paper is a modest attempt to collect data from northern, southern and central India to analyse the impact of microfinance on poverty through imperial evidence from across the country- The respondents were divided between two groups, Participants and Non-Participants, Participants were members of Self Help groups (SHGs) which have benefited from which scheme? and received bank loans. Non-participant members were those who were eligible for microfinance and formed SHGs but did not obtain credit up to the time of the survey. As per the NABARD guidelines, SHGs are provided bank loans only after active existence of the groups for about six months since inception. Non-participants belonged to the group which was less than six months old at the time of survey; - have not availed any benefit from the microfinance program. The study concludes that the socio-economic profile of sample respondents with experience of less than six months was completely different from the respondents with experience of more than six months.

Purpose In the 10 years since the International Cluttering Association (ICA) was created, this organization has been growing in the scope of its initiatives, and in the variety of resources it makes available for people with cluttering (PWC). However, the awareness of this disorder and of the methods for its intervention remain limited in countries around the world. A celebration of the multinational and multicultural engagements of the ICA's Committee of the International Representatives is a common thread running through all the articles in this forum. The first article is a joint effort among international representatives from five continents and 15 countries, exploring various themes related to cluttering, such as awareness, research, professional preparation, intervention, and self-help groups. The second article, by Elizabeth Gosselin and David Ward, investigates attention performance in PWC. In the third article, Yvonne van Zaalen and Isabella Reichel explain how audiovisual feedback training can improve the monitoring skills of PWC, with both quantitative and qualitative benefits in cognitive, emotional, and social domains of communication. In the final article, Hilda Sønsterud examines whether the working alliance between the client and clinician may predict a successful cluttering therapy outcome. Conclusions Authors of this forum exchanged their expertise, creativity, and passion with the goal of solving the mystery of the disconcerting cluttering disorder with the hope that all PWC around the globe will have access to the most effective evidence-based treatments leading to blissful and successful communication.
