The Semantic Web and Linked Data concepts and technologies have empowered the scientific community with solutions to take full advantage of the increasingly available distributed and heterogeneous data in distinct silos. Additionally, FAIR Data principles established guidelines for data to be Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable, and they are gaining traction in data stewardship. However, to explore their full potential, we must be able to transform legacy solutions smoothly into the FAIR Data ecosystem. In this paper, we introduce SCALEUS-FD, a FAIR Data extension of a legacy semantic web tool successfully used for data integration and semantic annotation and enrichment. The core functionalities of the solution follow the Semantic Web and Linked Data principles, offering a FAIR REST API for machine-to-machine operations. We applied a set of metrics to evaluate its “FAIRness” and created an application scenario in the rare diseases domain.

The emergence of the blockchain promises to revolutionise not only the financial world but also lifelong learning in various ways. Blockchain technology offers opportunities to thoroughly rethink how we find educational content and tutoring services online, how we register and pay for them, as well as how we get accredited for what we have learned and how this accreditation affects our career trajectory. This chapter explores the different aspects of lifelong learning that are affected by this new paradigm and describes an ecosystem that places the learner at the centre of the learning process and its associated data. This chapter also discusses the possibilities that will be afforded by the combination of trustworthy educational data enhanced with meaningful web-accessible linked data, and what these developments will mean for learners, educators, and the employment market.

With the growth of data-oriented research in humanities, a large number of research datasets have been created and published through web services. However, how to discover, integrate and reuse these distributed heterogeneous research datasets is a challenging task. Ontology is the soul between series digital humanities resources, which provides a good way for people to discover and understand these datasets. With the release of more and more linked open data and knowledge bases, a large number of ontologies have been produced at the same time. These ontologies have different publishing formats, consumption patterns, and interactions ways, which are not conductive to the user’s understanding of the datasets and the reuse of the ontologies. The Ontology Service Center platform consists of Ontology Query Center and Ontology Validation Center, mainly using linked data and ontology-based technologies. The Ontology Query Center realizes the functions of ontology publishing, querying, data interaction and online browsing, while the Ontology Validation Center can verify the status of using certain ontologies in the linked datasets. The empirical part of the paper uses the Confucius portrait as an example of how OSC can be used in the semantic annotation of images. In a word, the purpose of this paper is to construct the applied ecology of ontology to promote the development of knowledge graphs and the spread of ontology.
