Use of biological trait analysis of periphytic protozoan assemblages for evaluating effects of harmful algal blooms on ecological quality status in marine ecosystem

Abstract Based on biological traits the ecological quality status (EQS) under the pressure of two harmful algal bloom (HAB) species was evaluated using functional units (FUs) of protozoan periphytons. Five treatments with different concentrations of Alexandrium tamarense and Gymnodinium catenatum were designed as100, 102, 103, 104 and 105 cell ml− 1. A total of 21 FUs were identified from 25 test protozoan species. Vagile algivores with large sizes showed a decreasing trend towards high concentrations, while the vagile bacterivores and non-selectives with small sizes were dominating in concentrations (104 cell ml− 1) of both algal species. Ellipse test on pair-wise functional distinctness indices revealed a significant departure of test protozoan samples from an expected pattern when algal concentrations were over 104 cell ml− 1. Thus, it is suggested that FUs of protozoan periphyton assemblages may be used as a useful tool for evaluating the effects of HAB on ecological quality status in marine ecosystems.

In spite of the development and widespread dissemination of the model organic shrimp farming systems, the biological communities in the organic shrimp farming ponds have still very limited. Therefore, we conducted a field survey for macrobenthic communities (MC) of the Tam Giang‘s organic shrimp farming ponds (TGOSFP) located in Tam Giang commune, Nam Can district, Ca Mau province during three seasons in 2015 (March - dry, July - transfer and November - wet season). The results indicated that the MC have characterized by high density and slightly diversity that is a rich natural food sources for shrimp in the TGOSFP. Further more, the present study is a first attempt to use of new indices (AMBI - AZTI’s Marine Biotic Index) on MC for determining the ecological quality status of sediment (EcoQ) in the TGOSFP. The following results were also recorded with an undisturbed and slightly disturbed  EcoQ in the TGOSFP and the general EcoQ would likely be improved between three seasons. The success of AMBI for detecting EcoQ in Vietnam is specific to this study, but AMBI was likely to improved, in particular tropical regions.

Harmful algal blooms (Habs) caused great harm to the human environment. Habs occurrence was connected with other types of plankton. This relationship may be restrictive, and may also be promotional. Selectivity of zooplankton grazing has an important influence on the Habs. The behavior of zooplankton selective grazing was studied in the plankton ecosystem formed by three populations of nontoxic phytoplankton-toxic phytoplankton-zooplankton (NTP-TTP-Z) system. The selective grazing function of zooplankton on toxic phytoplankton and non-toxic phytoplankton was built based on Holling type IV functional response. Numerical simulation was given depending on the laboratory data. Results show that the models nicely explained the selective grazing behavior of zooplankton in the three species ecosystem, and provided key parameters for the marine ecosystem dynamics models.
