The article deals with the issues of glass use in the enclosing structures of large-span coverings, which have such advantages as ensuring the penetration of natural light, tightness, minimum labor costs for repair and maintenance. Design shortcomings: the high cost, the need for protection of the internal volume against the penetrating sun rays in the warm season (hothouse effect); arrangement of devices for operation of a roof. The key technical properties and characteristics of glass panels and pane-glass sets, constructive decisions, including interface to the main bearing structures of a large-span covering are given. Peculiarities of their design with due regard for ventilation and smoke removal, a drainage of condensate, ways of fight against frosting and snow drifts on the roof are reflected. Features of the account of loadings, the basic approaches to their calculation are considered. Various design solutions for the spatial metal trussed systems with the original nodal connections are presented. Information on modern solutions of translucent roofs using glass for large-span coverings is given.

A methodology to incorporate the three-dimensional molecular shape descriptor (3 D-MSD) into a quantitative structure-activity relationship is discussed in detail. The 3 D-MSD is calculated and correlated with Kiapp values for a set of 2,4-diamino-5-benzylpyrimidines which inhibit E. coli DHFR. The correlation (n = 22, r = 0.95, s = 0.214, F = 55.10) indicates that the polarization interaction dominates the enzyme-inhibitor interactional pattern.

Leaf is one of the most important organs of plant. Leaf contour or outline, usually a closed curve, is a fundamental morphological feature of leaf in botanical research. In this paper, a novel shape descriptor based on periodic wavelet series and leaf contour is presented, which we name as Periodic Wavelet Descriptor (PWD). The PWD of a leaf actually expresses the leaf contour in a vector form. Consequently, the PWD of a leaf has a wide range in practical applications, such as leaf modeling, plant species identification and classification, etc. In this work, the plant species identification and the leaf contour reconstruction, as two practical applications, are discussed to elaborate how to employ the PWD of a plant leaf in botanical research.

In many image analysis applications, such as image retrieval, the shape of an object is of primary importance. In this paper, a new shape descriptor, namely the Normalized Wavelet Descriptor (NWD), which is a generalization and extension of the Wavelet Descriptor (WD), is introduced. The NWD is compared to the Fourier Descriptor (FD), which in image retrieval experiments conducted by Zhang and Lu, outperformed even the Curvature Scale Space Descriptor (CSSD). Image retrieval experiments have been conducted using a dataset containing 2D-contours of 1400 objects extracted from the standard MPEG7 database. For the chosen dataset, our experimental results show that the NWD outperforms the FD.
