Primary magmatic biotite in granitoid intrusions associated with Late Mesozoic Jinchanggouliang-Erdaogou lode gold deposits, North China Craton: Linkage to gold mineralization

AbstractThe link between lithosphere thinning and formation of world-class gold deposits is well established in the Jiaodong Peninsula within the eastern North China Craton (NCC). However, the timing of initiation and duration of the lithospheric thinning process as well as the depth of formation of the mineralization remain uncertain. Since these parameters are fundamental to formulate exploration strategies, in this study we perform fission track (FT) analysis on zircon and apatite grains in Late Mesozoic granitoid samples from the Jiaodong Peninsula and provide new constraints for the mode and duration of lithospheric evolution and mineralization depth. The zircon FT ages range from 64.3 to 90.9 Ma and those of apatite show a range of 32.8–50.9 Ma. The data collectively display age peaks at ~60–80 and ~30–50 Ma. Reverse modelling of the apatite FT results indicates rapid crustal uplift during ~30–80 Ma in the Jiaodong Peninsula. This period coincides with the timing of maximal sedimentation in the neighboring basins and voluminous basaltic eruptions in the eastern NCC. We suggest that the Jiaodong Peninsula has experienced two stages of crust uplift in the Late Cretaceous and Paleogene as a consequence of the continuing lithosphere thinning, together with the surrounding basins, forming the horst–graben system in the eastern NCC. The Late Mesozoic granitoids are the main wall rocks for gold deposits in Jiaodong, and thus the crust denudation history gathered from the FT data suggest that the gold mineralization formed at depths of c. 6–11 km.

Abstract The origin of giant lode gold deposits of Mesozoic age in the North China craton (NCC) is enigmatic because high-grade metamorphic ancient crust would be highly depleted in gold. Instead, lithospheric mantle beneath the crust is the likely source of the gold, which may have been anomalously enriched by metasomatic processes. However, the role of gold enrichment and metasomatism in the lithospheric mantle remains unclear. Here, we present comprehensive data on gold and platinum group element contents of mantle xenoliths (n = 28) and basalts (n = 47) representing the temporal evolution of the eastern NCC. The results indicate that extensive mantle metasomatism and hydration introduced some gold (<1–2 ppb) but did not lead to a gold-enriched mantle. However, volatile-rich basalts formed mainly from the metasomatized lithospheric mantle display noticeably elevated gold contents as compared to those from the asthenosphere. Combined with the significant inheritance of mantle-derived volatiles in auriferous fluids of ore bodies, the new data reveal that the mechanism for the formation of the lode gold deposits was related to the volatile-rich components that accumulated during metasomatism and facilitated the release of gold during extensional craton destruction and mantle melting. Gold-bearing, hydrous magmas ascended rapidly along translithospheric fault zones and evolved auriferous fluids to form the giant deposits in the crust.

Abstract The Xiaoqinling gold field, located along the southern margin of the North China craton, is the second largest gold producer in China, which comprises more than 1,200 auriferous quartz veins with a proven gold reserve of at least 800 tons. Previously, the absolute age of the gold metallogenesis in this area has not been well defined due to the lack of suitable dating minerals. This study presents new in situ laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry U-Pb ages of coexisting hydrothermal monazite and rutile for the Fancha gold deposit in this area, which yielded 206Pb/238U ages of 127.5 ± 0.7 Ma (n = 65, mean square of weighted deviates [MSWD] = 1.8) and 129.7 ± 4.3 Ma (n = 37, MSWD = 1.4), respectively. Both ages overlap within analytical uncertainty at the 2σ level of significance, suggesting that both gold-bearing veins were emplaced at ca. 128 Ma. Mineralogical observations indicate that the monazite and rutile precipitated simultaneously with gold from the hydrothermal fluid. Our new data, combined with recently published monazite age, define a more precise gold episode, demonstrating that the gold endowment of the Xiaoqinling area was formed during a relatively brief period at ca. 130 to 127 Ma. We suggest that auriferous fluids were generated as a result of interactions between the enriched mantle and the lower crust, which was driven by westward flat slab subduction of the Paleo-Pacific plate during the late Mesozoic. The peak of lithospheric thinning during the postsubduction may have led to the rapid release of gold from the fertilized mantle. Consequently, the large number of gold-bearing veins in the Xiaoqinling area may ultimately be related to the tectonic evolution and mantle fluid processes that occurred during Early Cretaceous lithospheric extension.

Os depósitos tipo lode-gold orogênicos Cachorro Bravo, Laranjeiras e Carvoaria, associados ao lineamento regional Córrego doSítio (CdS), estão localizados na porção leste do Quadrilátero Ferrífero, sudeste do cráton São Francisco. São hospedados em rochasmetassedimentares turbidíticas arqueanas do greenstone belt Rio das Velhas e controlados por zonas de cisalhamento NE-SW. Diques esoleiras metamáficos pré- a pós-deformacionais ocorrem intimamente associados à mineralização aurífera e constituem excelentes guiasprospectivos em lineamentos regionais como CdS. Cinco sistemas de veios, V1 a V5, são classificados de acordo com a composiçãomineralógica, textura, orientação, distribuição espacial e geometria. Dois tipos de quartzo ocorrem nestes veios, sendo o tipo 1predominantemente fumê, cedo-hidrotermal, e o tipo 2 leitoso, recristalizado. Apenas os veios V1 (fault-fill veins) são relacionados àmineralização aurífera através da paragênese arsenopirita+pirita+pirrotita+berthierita+ ouro livre; se desenvolvem concordantes à foliaçãomilonítica, S1m, e estão deformados. Veios V2 (oblique-extension veins) são associados temporalmente aos V1 e, embora não estejammineralizados nos depósitos estudados, são contemporâneos ao estágio mineralizador. Estes dois sistemas foram formados em regimedúctil-rúptil. Veios V3 (extension e breccia veins) são tardios à mineralização e representam um estágio posterior do fluido em regimedúctil-rúptil a rúptil; podem estar relacionados à mudança do campo de tensão regional e colocação dos diques tardios Db1. Os veios V4(extension veins) possuem reações de substituição mineral que marcam a hidratação do sistema e podem se associar ao relaxamento dasforças compressivas. They are hosted in Archeanmetaturbiditic rocks of the Rio das Velhas greenstone belt and controlled by NE-SW shear zones. Pre- to post-deformational dikes/sills areclosely related to gold mineralization and constitute excellent prospective guides in these regional lineaments such as CdS. Five veinsystems have been classified, V1 to V5, in accordance to their mineralogical composition, texture, orientation, spatial distribution andgeometry. Two types of quartz occur in these veins, with type 1 being predominantly smoky, early hydrothermal, and type 2 a milky,recrystallized quartz. Only V1 veins (fault-fill vein) are related to gold and have a paragenesis with arsenopyrite+pyrite+pyrrhotite+berthierite+ free gold; they develop along the mylonitic foliation S1m, and have been deformed. The V2 veins (oblique-extension veins) areassociated temporally with V1 and although non-mineralized, in the studied deposits they are contemporaneous to the gold stage. Thesetwo systems are formed under a ductile-brittle regime. The V3 veins (extension and breccias veins) are post gold and represent a late-stagehydrothermal fluid under ductile-brittle to brittle regime; they may be related to changes in the stress field and to the emplacement oflate-stage Db1 dikes. The V4 veins (extension veins) have mineral replacement reactions that represent hydration of the system associatedwith the relaxation of the compressive field. The V5 veins (stockwork style) are limited to metamafic Db1 dykes/sills and fluid inclusionstudies indicate that they contain a different fluid from the others systems.Keywords: Quartz-carbonate vein classification, orogenic gold, shear zones, dikes/sills
