Hydroxyapatite (HAp) is very attractive in medical field. The objective of this study is to produce HAp/Ti composite coating with Supersonic Free-Jet PVD (SFJ-PVD). The SFJ-PVD is a technique to deposit nanoparticles with supersonic gas flow and to form a thick coating film. In a gas evaporation chamber, a source material is evaporated to form nanoparticles in an inert gas atmosphere. The nanoparticles are then carried to a substrate in a deposition chamber with an inert gas flow through a transfer pipe. The gas flow is generated by the pressure difference between the chambers and accelerated to the supersonic flow of 4.2 Mach through a specially designed supersonic nozzle. With SFJ-PVD, we obtain a uniform high-density HAp/Ti composite coating. XRD analysis reveals that the composite coating is composed of Ti and HAp. An in-vitro study was carried out to investigate the bioactivity of the HAp/Ti composite coating under simulated body fluid.

After the technologies of measurement for thin-film thickness were analyzed, the method of real-time measurement for coating thickness based on quartz crystal oscillation was proposed. The principle of the thickness measured by frequency shifting was analyzed on theory, the functional relationship between the resonant frequency shifting and the film thickness changing was deduced. Aim at the complicated working condition in coating machine, the structure of the measuring system for reducing the influence from external pressure and temperature was designed. The circuit for detecting the frequency shift was designed. Final, according to the experiment result, the resolution of thickness measurement can achieve sub-micrometer level.

The study presents the electroless N-P-Cg-SiC composite coating on cast AlSi (ADC12) alloy where the bath temperature is maintained at 90°C, pH level is controlled between 4.5 to 5.0 and stirred at 450 rpm with mechanical stirrer to avoid particles sedimentation. The increase of the coating film thickness is very insignificant after one hour of coating duration. This outcome is supposed to be due to inconsistent chemical concentration in the plating bath after this period. The nominal coating thickness of 39 μm is achieved after the substrate is immersed for 1 hour in four consecutive plating baths, respectively. The coating film is also successfully adhered to the substrate surface with the SiC and Cgparticles are homogenously distributed.
