Introduction. In the process of chrome plating of car parts, there is a change in the composition of the chrome plating bath, which affects the stability of the ongoing processes – the performance and quality of the chrome coating. Therefore, it is necessary to constantly monitor the chrome plating bath for the presence of foreign elements that can be formed during the operation of the bath during the reaction of the solution with the anode or cathode.Materials and methods. During the research, the necessary equipment was used, which made it possible to determine with sufficient accuracy the content of trivalent chromium and its effect on the electrolysis process – the performance and quality of chrome coatings. A well-known technique was used to determine the quality and performance.Results. When conducting studies of the obtained cold self-regulating chromium plating electrolyte, it was found that trivalent chromium has a significant effect on the stability of the chromium plating bath. The content of which can vary within 2...25 g/l during operation. As a result, it was found that the optimal amount of trivalent chromium is its content in the chromium plating bath from 2 to 15 g/l. With a lower or higher content, the electrolysis performance and the quality of the chrome coating decrease. It was also found that in order to maintain the optimal amount of trivalent chromium and increase the time for stable operation of the chromium bath, it is necessary to observe the ratio of the area of the anode and cathode (the coated surface of the part), the value of which is within 3...4.Discussion and conclusion. As a result of the conducted research, it will make it possible, under certain conditions, to carry out the process of chromium deposition from a cold self-regulating electrolyte, which will allow for stable chromium deposition at high productivity and the necessary quality of the coatings obtained. The main condition is to control and maintain the amount of trivalent chromium in the chromium plating electrolyte in the bath.

Various formulations for electroless deposition, to obtain continuous nanometre-sized and micrometre-sized films of palladium on copper, were compared. We deposited ultrathin films using displacement plating formulations. We obtained continuous films with an equivalent thickness between 6 and 22 nm, measured by exploiting the K-ratio method with SEM-EDS of Pd layers. The Pd films obtained in this step of the work represent a cost-effective catalytic substrate. As a second step, we selected chemical plating as the procedure to obtain palladium films with a thickness in the micrometre range. An ammonia-based Pd chemical plating bath represent one of the most effective chemical plating formulations. To prevent copper substrates from being damaged by ammonia, displacement plating with palladium was also applied as a pre-treatment to make the use of these plating baths a viable way to obtain thicker palladium coatings. Palladium films showing good adherence, compact morphology, and a thickness over 1.5 μm were obtained, proving that the combination of two different electroless techniques was the key to develop a sustainable procedure for micrometre-sized palladium coatings, which could substitute electroplating of Pd in galvanic industry for decorative applications.

Three electrochemical methods used to detect organic additives, A, B and C, in acidic plating baths. Cyclic voltammetric stripping (CVS) is used in industry to detect the concentration of organic additives indirectly by measuring the effect of commercial organic additives on the rate of copper deposition. This study directly determines the concentration of organic additives on a screen-printed nano-Au electrode at high potential using three different electrochemical methods: linear scanning voltammetry (LSV), differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) and square wave voltammetry (SWV). The results show that the response currents for the three electrochemical methods exhibit a linear relationship with the concentration of organic additives. The nano-Au electrode is the most sensitive device for the detection of organic additive B using LSV.

High-performance composite Pd membranes were successfully fabricated using electroless plating with an EDTA-free bath. The plating started with employing the one-time addition of hydrazine. In the experiment, the hydrazine concentrations and plating bath volumes were systematically varied to optimize the plating. The optimum composite Pd membrane tube showed high H2 permeance of 4.4 × 10−3 mol/m2 s Pa0.5 and high selectivity of 1.6 × 104, but poor cycling stability. Then, a method of sequential addition of the hydrazine from the high to low concentrations was employed. The resultant membrane, about 6 μm thick, still exhibited a high selectivity of 6.8 × 104 as well as a much-improved plating yield and cycling stability level; this membrane outperformed the membrane made using the unmodified plating technique with the EDTA-contained bath. This result indicates the EDTA-free bath combined with the sequential addition of hydrazine is a simple, low-cost, yet effective method for preparing thin, dense composite Pd membranes featuring high hydrogen permeation flux and high thermal durability.

The effects of alkaline non-cyanide zinc plating bath formulation on the plating characteristics and deposit properties are investigated. Scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffractometer are used to study the surface morphology and texture of the zinc deposits respectively. Uniform and compact coatings with a dominant (110) texture are obtained for all of the bath formulations. Nevertheless, significant differences in surface morphology and relative preferences for the (110) and (100) planes were found to result from the concentrations of zinc and sodium hydroxide in the bath. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and potentiodynamic polarization scan were employed to evaluate the corrosion resistance. The coatings with a moderate Zn (8-11 g/L) and controlled NaOH (120 g/L) contents show good corrosion resistance, with the corrosion current and corrosion rate being the lowest at 8 g/L of Zn and 120 g/L of NaOH. The ratio of texture coefficient, morphology, and compressive residual stress from different bath composition contribute to the corrosion resistant property. The findings from this work should provide useful information of electrogalvanized zinc coatings with enhanced corrosion resistance.

Regenerated cellulose fibers coated with copper via electroless plating process are investigated for their mechanical properties, molecular structure changes, and suitability for use in sensing applications. Mechanical properties are evaluated in terms of tensile stiffness and strength of fiber tows before, during and after the plating process. The effect of the treatment on the molecular structure of fibers is investigated by measuring their thermal stability with differential scanning calorimetry and obtaining Raman spectra of fibers at different stages of the treatment. Results show that the last stage in the electroless process (the plating step) is the most detrimental, causing changes in fibers’ properties. Fibers seem to lose their structural integrity and develop surface defects that result in a substantial loss in their mechanical strength. However, repeating the process more than once or elongating the residence time in the plating bath does not show a further negative effect on the strength but contributes to the increase in the copper coating thickness, and, subsequently, the final stiffness of the tows. Monitoring the changes in resistance values with applied strain on a model composite made of these conductive tows show an excellent correlation between the increase in strain and increase in electrical resistance. These results indicate that these fibers show potential when combined with conventional composites of glass or carbon fibers as structure monitoring devices without largely affecting their mechanical performance.
