Algal samples from different parts of the frond of Laminaria digitata (young, adult and aged tissues) and from macroscopic fragments naturally separated from the thallus were collected on the Atlantic coast of France (Brittany) during winter and spring. Bacterial communities associated with the different levels were compared, and the ATP content was determined and used as an indicator of the physiological state of the tissues. It is higher in young tissue (55 nmol/g of fresh kelp) than in fragments (9 nmol/g of fresh kelp), showing a decrease in the number of metabolically active cells. If total bacterial density values are relatively close on the different parts of the kelp (average, 2.9 × 107 bacteria/cm2), culturable microflora increased from young tissue (minimum, 15 cfu/cm2) to fragments (average, 3.6 × 107 bacteria/cm2). Characterization of strains showed an increase of metabolic activity together with a diversification in the culturable fraction with the age of algal tissues.Key words: epiphytic bacteria, kelp, Laminaria digitata.

Introduction: Sex with animals is a male practice with a social acceptance in many areas of the Colombian Atlantic coast; however, this behavior has been little studied. The aim of this study was to characterize the practice of sex with animals in a group of men living in Cordoba department, Colombia. Methods: descriptive quantitative study was made. Forty-seven adults were interviewed. The information was collected through a survey which asked about sociodemographic aspects, characteristics and beliefs around the behavior. Results: Total participants knew about the practice, 68,1% stated to have had it and they said it happened between the ages of 7 and 30 years old, for an average time of seven years gap; 65,6% had it in presence of friends and relatives. 87,6% said the practice feels really good at the first time; 35,6% stated it was a beneficial practice and 37,5% said they would like their sons to experience it. Conclusion: Having sex with animals is a social accepted behavior and it is thought to be positive since it helps the correct psychosexual development  and it prevents other behaviors, not culturally accepted, such as drug use or homosexuality.

AbstractAnisakid nematodes are parasites with an indirect life cycle, involving many hosts, including cetaceans that act as definitive hosts. Identification at species level is crucial for a better understanding of the epidemiology and ecology of these parasites, but an accurate diagnosis based only on morphology is difficult. In Brazil, genetic characterization of anisakids is still rare, with Anisakis typica and A. physeteris being the only two species identified by genetic markers until now. The definitive hosts of A. nascettii are Mesoplodon grayi, M. bowdoini, M. layardii and M. mirus. Geographical locations of A. nascettii include the coasts of New Zealand, South Africa and Europe. In this study, a nematode was collected from a Gervais' beaked whale, Mesoplodon europaeus, stranded in Ceará State, north-east Brazil. Genetic analysis based on 18S rDNA, internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region and mtDNA cox2 gene revealed 100% identity with Anisakis sp. U94365, 99% with Anisakis sp. (MP-2005 EU718477 A. nascettii) and 99% with A. nascettii DQ116431, respectively. Phylogenetic analyses of ITS and cox2 sequences using both neighbour-joining and maximum-likelihood methods provided strong support for a clade with only A. nascettii specimens. This study demonstrated for the first time the identification of A. nascettii in the Brazilian Atlantic Coast, revealing a wider geographical distribution of this parasite worldwide and extending the range of its definitive hosts to a new Mesoplodon species, M. europaeus, the Gervais' beaked whale.

A Vibrio tubiashii hemagglutinin, a protease, was purified by ammonium sulfate precipitation, gel filtration, and hydrophobic interaction chromatography. It agglutinates sheep, chicken, bovine, rabbit, guinea pig, and human erythrocytes. It has a molecular mass of 35 kDa, isoelectric points of 3.5 and 3.7, and is inhibited by ortho-phenanthro line, phosphoramidon, and Zincov. The N-terminal amino acid sequence (Ala-Gln-Ala-Thr-Gly-Thr-Gly- Pro-Gly-Gly-Asn-Gln-Lys-Thr-Gly-Gln- Tyr-Asn-Phe-Gly) has strong homology to other Vibrio proteases.Key words: Vibrio tubiashii, metalloprotease, hemagglutinin.
