In this paper, the crack stopping mechanisms in corrugated composite bonded joints and hybrid bonded/bolted joints were evaluated numerically using the cohesive zone modeling approach. For the study, the DCB (double-cantilever beam) and the CLS (crack-lap shear) specimens were modelled. The first two specimens were subjected to static loads and the latter both to static and fatigue loads. The analysis was performed using the LS-DYNA explicit FE code. Fatigue crack growth simulation was performed using an in-house developed user-defined subroutine (UMAT). The numerical results reveal a crack stopping in the corrugated DCB, no crack stopping in the corrugated CLS and a reduction of crack growth rate in the bonded/bolted CLS for both static and fatigue loads. The methods and the findings of the present study can be used for the design of crack stopping features in adhesively bonded primary composite aircraft structures.

This review paper discusses the basic problems related to the use of cohesive models to simulate the initiation and development of failure in various types of engineering issues. The most commonly used cohesive zone models (CZMs) are described. Recent achievements in the field of cohesive modeling are characterized, with particular emphasis on the problem of mixed mode loading, the influence of the strain rate, the stress state triaxiality, and fatigue. A separate chapter of the work is devoted to the identification of cohesive parameters. Examples of the use of CZMs for the analysis of the fracture and failure process in various applications, both on the macro and microscopic scale, are given. The directions of CZMs development were indicated as well as the issues that are currently under particularly intensive development.

The study focuses on using fracture mechanics to evaluate mixed-mode fracture properties of adhesively bonded aerospace material systems. As a part of experimental efforts, mixed-mode fracture tests were performed using modified Arcan specimens consisting of several combinations of adhesive, composite and metallic adherends using a special loading device. Experimental and numerical studies of mixed-mode fracture behaviour of adhesively bonded aluminum and steel were also performed using an adhesive in the aerospace industry. Finite element analyses were carried out on specimens with different adherends. Based on those analyses, many fundamental numerical results were obtained.
