Principal component analysis application in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons “mussel watch” analyses for source identification

The aim of this study was to compare the nitrosamines (NAs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) of Chinese smoke-cured bacon (Larou) of artisanal and industrial origin. The results showed that the average pH and Aw values of family-made Larou products were lower than those of industrial Larou, which was opposite to the TBARS level. The contents of residual nitrite and PAH4 in two artisanal Larou were significantly higher than those of the other groups (p < 0.05). The highest NA content (10.78 μg/kg) was found in family-made Larou. A correlation analysis indicated that the relationships between residual nitrite contents and total PAH8 contents (τ = 0.692, p < 0.01) and total NAs contents (τ = 0.805, p < 0.01) were characterized with a positive correlation. A principal component analysis indicated that the Larou from the industrial sources had similar safety attributes, and was more stable than the Larou processed in an artisanal manner. Our data suggest that Larou produced in industrial conditions is suitable for consumption.

The recent availability of reliable and relatively low-cost GaN based semi-conductor laser diode sources emitting at 404 nm has opened many new areas for fluorescence based measurements. This article characterizes the fluorescence behavior of commercial liquid-phase gasoline samples using such excitation sources. Comparison is drawn with the emission when excited using broad-band sources at shorter wavelengths (340 nm). Here, 404 nm is shown to selectively excite the larger C xH y polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) commonly found as minor constituents of gasoline, mainly for ( x, y) ≥ (14, 10). Both Stokes and anti-Stokes shifted emission was observed in all the gasoline tested and in some PAH samples. The fluorescence is usually superimposed on Raman scattered laser light, arising from vibrations within the basic benzene structures. The fluorescence features of the gasoline samples tested were found to be broadly similar, but, because of its distinctive spectroscopic features, the fluorescence arising from benzo(a)pyrene was found to be one of the main variants. More generally, principal component analysis of the spectra was able to highlight differences between both the sample provenance and the fuel variety.

Grilling activities release large amounts of hazardous pollutants, but information on restaurant grill workers’ exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is almost inexistent. This study assessed the impact of grilling emissions on total workers’ exposure to PAHs by evaluating the concentrations of six urinary biomarkers of exposure (OHPAHs): naphthalene, acenaphthene, fluorene, phenanthrene, pyrene, and benzo(a)pyrene. Individual levels and excretion profiles of urinary OHPAHs were determined during working and nonworking periods. Urinary OHPAHs were quantified by high-performance liquid-chromatography with fluorescence detection. Levels of total OHPAHs (∑OHPAHs) were significantly increased (about nine times; p ≤ 0.001) during working comparatively with nonworking days. Urinary 1-hydroxynaphthalene + 1-hydroxyacenapthene and 2-hydroxyfluorene presented the highest increments (ca. 23- and 6-fold increase, respectively), followed by 1-hydroxyphenanthrene (ca. 2.3 times) and 1-hydroxypyrene (ca. 1.8 times). Additionally, 1-hydroxypyrene levels were higher than the benchmark, 0.5 µmol/mol creatinine, in 5% of exposed workers. Moreover, 3-hydroxybenzo(a)pyrene, biomarker of exposure to carcinogenic PAHs, was detected in 13% of exposed workers. Individual excretion profiles showed a cumulative increase in ∑OHPAHs during consecutive working days. A principal component analysis model partially discriminated workers’ exposure during working and nonworking periods showing the impact of grilling activities. Urinary OHPAHs were increased in grill workers during working days.
