On the example of F1 hybrid combinations and tomato varieties, the possibility of the assessing method for pollen selection on the responses of male gametophytes under conditions of viral pathogenesis and drought has been shown. It was found the action of factors on the pollen viability and on the rate of pollen tubes growth, leading to the manifestation of differential reactions. The viruses are the main sources of variability of the pollen functional traits, while the effect of water deficit and genotype are considerably weaker. Genotypes that combine the high viability of pollen with the ability to form longer pollen tubes under the complementary action of viruses and water deficit have been identified, suggesting the prospect of these genotypes using in further breeding studies.

Durability tests against fungi action for wood-plastic composites are carried out in accordance with European standard ENV 12038, but the authors of the manuscript try to prove that the assessment of the results done according to these methods is imprecise and suffers from a significant error. Fungi exposure is always accompanied by high humidity, so the result of tests made by such method is always burdened with the influence of moisture, which can lead to a wrong assessment of the negative effects of action fungus itself. The manuscript has shown a modification of such a method that separates the destructive effect of fungi from moisture accompanying the test’s destructive effect. The functional properties selected to prove the proposed modification are changes in the mass and bending strength after subsequent environmental exposure. It was found that intensive action of moisture measured in the culture chamber of about (70 ± 5)%, i.e., for 16 weeks, at (22 ± 2) °C, which was the fungi culture, which was accompanying period, led to changes in the mass of the wood-plastic composites, amounting to 50% of the final result of the fungi resistance test, and changes in the bending strength amounting to 30–46% of the final test result. As a result of the research, the correction for assessing the durability of wood-polymer composites to biological corrosion has been proposed. The laboratory tests were compared with the products’ test results following three years of exposure to the natural environment.

AbstractScientific methods are heuristic in nature. Heuristics are simplifying, incomplete, underdetermined and fallible problem-solving rules that can nevertheless serve certain goals in certain contexts better than truth-preserving algorithms. Because of their goal- and context-dependence, a framework is needed for systematic choosing between them. This is the domain of scientific methodology. Such a methodology, I argue, relies on a form of instrumental rationality. Three challenges to such an instrumentalist account are addressed. First, some authors have argued that the rational choice of at least some methods, namely those supporting belief formation, is not goal-dependent. Second, some authors have observed that some method choices seem intuitively rational, even though relevant goals are lacking. Thirdly, some authors have argued that instrumental rationality itself depends on a goal-independent form of rationality. It is the heuristic nature of scientific methods that affords me the arguments against these challenges. This heuristic-instrumentalist account provides the means-ends analysis needed to evaluate heuristic method choice. The paper thus offers the conceptual basis for a scientific methodology that is both compatible with the heuristic nature of actual scientific practice and also normatively relevant for assessing method choice.

Root-feeding Melolonthinae larvae are a forest pest species in Europe that can exert serious damage. In Poland, they are classified as the most dangerous pest on land dedicated to afforestation and the most serious threat to natural regeneration in the stands. This study was performed in three forest districts in east Poland (Lubartów, Marcule, and Wyszków forest districts) in mixed conifer forests, where the presence of Melolontha spp. grubs was evaluated in autumn and spring of 2012 to 2017, respectively. In spring 2012, 2014, and 2016, consecutively ‘small sawdust pits’ in rows between seedlings were prepared, and in adjacent inter-rows similar control pits without sawdust were marked. In spring and autumn of the following year, sawdust and soil from both types of pits were sieved and Melolonthinae larvae were counted and compared. More grubs were found in sawdust pits in spring than in autumn. In Marcule Forest District (FD) (2014), more grubs were found in inter-rows than in rows with seedlings, when compared to grubs detected using the traditional method of “autumn large pits assessment”, recommended by Polish forest rules. The Melolonthinae population size and location of grubs were related to the weather conditions in the evaluated periods, as well. We conclude that to properly assess the cockchafer threat, it is necessary to perform spring assessment and to search in inter-rows. This could be recommended for decisions on control.

Abstract. An assessment of extreme significant wave heights is performed in the South China Sea (SCS), which is crucial for the coastal and offshore engineering in this area. Two significant factors influencing the assessment are the initial database and the assessing method. The initial database is a basic for assessment, and the assessing method is used to extrapolate appropriate return significant wave heights based on this database during a period. In this study, a 40-year (1975–2014) hindcasted significant wave height of tropical cyclone waves is adopted as the initial database. Based on this database, the peak significant wave height of every tropical cyclone wave is directly extracted as the initial sample; the independent and identically distributed assumption is satisfied; and the interference for the selection of the sample is avoided. The peak over threshold (POT) method with the generalized Pareto distribution (GPD) model is employed to extract the sufficiently large and high sample for model estimation. The peak excesses over a sufficiently high value (i.e., threshold) are fitted; thus, the return significant wave heights are highly dependent on the threshold. To determine the unique threshold for the POT method, characteristics of tropical cyclone waves are researched. The research results reveal that the separation value shown in the distribution of the initial sample is suitable for sampling in the SCS. Because the separation value is within the stable threshold range and the asymptotic tail approximation and estimation uncertainty are reasonable, the selected threshold is suitable and the corresponding return significant wave height is reliable.

This paper presents a research on different problems in final testing and assessing English competence of second year students at a university in Hanoi towards the Vietnamese outcome framework of 6 competence levels. Based on the theoretical framework about contents and methods of assessing English competence, as well as the framework of 6 competence levels adapted for Vietnam, the authors did a survey on the tests and grades of English 4 (final English subject for second year students) from 300 students of different majors from school year 2009-2010 to school year 2015-2016. The authors also gave a questionnaire to 400 students and interviewed 10 lecturers teaching this subject. From the collected data, the research demonstrates different problems in this testing and assessing method and proposes several recommendations to solve the problems.
