Objective. To investigate the expression and clinical significance of trans-membrane MerTK (mMer) on circulating CD14+ monocytes/macrophages and soluble MerTK (sMer) levels in plasma in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).Method. 108 SLE patients and 42 healthy controls were recruited in this study. The expression of mMer on the surfaces of CD14+ monocytes/macrophages was evaluated by flow cytometry (FCM). The sMer levels were measured by ELISA. Real-time quantitative PCR was applied to evaluate the mRNA levels of MerTK and ADAM17.Results. Both mMer expression on CD14+ monocytes/macrophages and sMer levels in plasma significantly increased in SLE patients compared to healthy subjects. The frequency of anti-inflammatory MerTK expressing CD14+CD16+ monocytes decreased in SLE. mMer expression was positively correlated with CD163 expression on CD14+ cells. Both the mMer expression on CD14+ monocytes/macrophages and sMer levels in plasma were positively correlated with SLEDAI. Furthermore, more elevated mMer and sMer levels were found in patients with higher SLEDAI, presence of anti-SSA, anti-Sm autoantibodies, and lupus nephritis.Conclusion. Both mMer and sMer levels significantly increased in SLE and positively correlated with disease activity and severity. The upregulation of MerTK expression may serve as a biomarker of the disease activity and severity of SLE.

Depression influences personality measures like Eysenck's Big Three, Costa and McCrae's Big Five or Cloninger's Seven Factor models, and might also affect Zuckerman-Kuhlman's Personality Questionnaire (ZKPQ), an alternative five-factor model. The authors therefore tested ZKPQ in 85 patients suffering from major depression and in 82 healthy subjects in order to clarify this effect. Depressive mood was measured with Plutchik – van Praag's Depression Inventory (PVP). Patients scored significantly higher on PVP, Neuroticism-Anxiety and Aggression-Hostility, but lower on Activity and Sociablity than did healthy volunteers. In the general sample (N = 167), Neuroticism-Anxiety and Aggression-Hostility scores were positively correlated, while the Sociability score was negatively correlated with the PVP score. These results indicate that when the clinical significance relating to personality traits in patients is interpreted, depressive mood must also be considered.

Summary Serial urinary neopterin determinations were performed in 151 patients after exeresis of a malignant melanoma. Values for patients clinically free of disease at the end of the observation were similar to those of healthy subjects. No significant varia tions were observed in patients with cutaneous meta stases. The most important variations were found in patients who developed ganglionic and above all visceral metastases. These data suggest that neopterin determination could be very useful in the follow-up of patients with a malignant melanoma and especially for detecting visceral metastases occurences.

Abstract Using an HPLC procedure, we evaluated > 10 minor hemoglobins (Hbs) in healthy adults, individuals on long-term aspirin therapy, diabetic subjects, and uremic patients. Hb A1c and Hb A1d3 were the most abundant and important minor Hb components, respectively, accounting for 4.10% +/- 0.50% and 3.46% +/- 0.43% of total Hb in 361 healthy subjects. Acetylated Hb A was a potential interferent in the measurement of Hb A1c. The amounts of both Hb A1d3 and Hb A1carb were significantly increased in uremic patients, indicating that these Hb adducts may be carbamylated. There was a significant correlation (r = 0.69, P < 0.0001) between the amounts of Hb A1d3 and plasma urea in uremic patients. Nonuremic subjects were clearly separated from uremic patients with regard to the Hb A1d3 content of their total Hb. Our data suggest that Hb A1d3 is useful for assessment of the uremic state and that the combination of Hb A1c and Hb A1d3 could be well-suited for simultaneous control of carbohydrate and urea metabolism.

Background:Axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the sacroiliac joints and spine. Lipid profiles, including total cholesterol(TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-c), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c), TC/HDL-c, triglycerides(TG), have been reported to be changed regularly in axSpA patients. However, the clinical significance of lipid profiles in axSpA patients is controversial. Objectives:The study aims to determine the clinical significance of TC, HDL-c, LDL-c, TC/HDL-c, TG for axSpA patients. Methods:A total of 208 axSpA patients and 113 healthy subjects were enrolled in the study retrospectively. TC, HDL-c, LDL-c, TC/HDL-c, TG, C-reactive protein (CRP), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index(BASDAI) were collected. AxSpA patients were divided into remission axSpA group(BASDAI<4, n=123) and active axSpA group(BASDAI≥4, n=85). Relationships between the parameters were assessed by the Sperman’ s correlations analysis. Receiver operation characteristic (ROC) curves were used to discriminate axSpA patients from healthy subjects and active axSpA group from remission axSpA group. Results:TC, HDL-c, and TG in axSpA group were lower than those of control group, while TC/HDL-c was higher (P<0.05). ROC curve results showed that the AUC value of HDL-c for axSpA was 0.790 (CI95%: 0.740-0.839), yielding a highest AUC value. The optimal cutoff value of HDL-c for axSpA was 1.095, with the Youden index of 0.496, sensitivity of 65.5% and specificity of 84.1%. HDL-c was negatively correlated with BASDAI (r=-0.159, P=0.022). TC/HDL-c was positively correlated with BASDAI (r=0.183, P=0.008). Besides, TC/HDL-c, CRP, ESR in active axSpA group were higher than those of remission axSpA group, while HDL-c was lower (P<0.05). ROC curve results showed that the AUC value of TC/HDL-c and CRP for active axSpA group were 0.621 (CI95%: 0.543-0.700) and 0.634 (CI95%: 0.556-0.712), yielding a higher AUC value than other parameters. The optimal cutoff value of TC/HDL-c for active axSpA group was 4.429, with the Youden index of 0.201, sensitivity of 40.2% and specificity of 79.9%.Conclusion:HDL-c was decreased in axSpA patients with a highest diagnostic value, compared with healthy control. TC/HDL-c was elevated in active axSpA patients, showing a significant correlation to the disease activity of axSpA.References:[1]Gluszko P, Bonek K, Rupinski R, et al. Abstract Background Coronary artery disease (CAD) is major public health problem and the leading cause of premature death all over the world. Early diagnosis with adequate management of CAD patients can significantly reduce morbidity and mortality rate. Purpose The purpose of this study was to explore the clinical significance of plasma miR-126 as a biomarker of stable angina pectoris patients and investigated the protective effects of hypoxic exposed HUVEC cell injury. Methods Angiographically confirmed 127 stable coronary artery (CAD) patients, 55 healthy subjects and 18hours hypoxic (1% O2) HUVEC cells were included in this study. Results The expression of miR-126 levels were remarkably down-regulated in stable CAD patients and hypoxic exposed HUVEC cells as compared with controls (p<0.001). Circulating plasma miR-126 was able to accurately differentiated stable CAD patients from healthy subjects with high sensitivity and specificity (AUC 0.928). The caspase-3 activity, apoptosis rate, LDH levels and intracellular ROS generation were significantly increased in 24hours hypoxic exposed HUVEC cells than normal control cells (p<0.001). On the contrary, over expressions of miR-126 were evidently reduced caspase-3 activity, apoptosis rate, LDH levels, intracellular ROS production and significantly improved HUVEC cellular viability (p<0.001). Moreover, TNF receptor-associated factor 6 (TRAF6) expressions were markedly increased in Hypoxic induced HUVEC cells, whereas mimic expression of miR-126 significantly decreased TRAF6 expression. Conclusion Down-regulated miR-126 may consider as a potential risk factor for stable CAD patients and it may used as a possible biomarker for early evaluation of CAD patients. Mimic expression of miR-126 remarkably decreased caspase-3 activity, LDH secretions, ROS levels and markedly improved HUVEC cellular viability by down-regulating TRAF6 expression, suggesting a newer therapeutic target for CAD patients. ABSTRACT:Cutaneous reflexes in the upper limb were elicited by stimulating digital nerves and recorded by averaging rectified EMG from proximal and distal upper limb muscles during voluntary contraction. Distal muscles often showed a triphasic response: an inhibition with onset about 50 ms (Il) followed by a facilitation with onset about 60 ms (E2) followed by another inhibition with onset about 80 ms (12). Proximal muscles generally showed biphasic responses beginning with facilitation or inhibition with onset at about 40 ms. Normal ranges for the amplitude of these components were established from recordings on 22 arms of 11 healthy subjects. An attempt was made to determine the alterent fibers responsible for the various components by varying the stimulus intensity, by causing ischemic block of larger fibers and by estimating the afferent conduction velocities. The central pathways mediating these reflexes were examined by estimating central delays and by studying patients with focal lesions
