We collected and analyzed literature data on ionic conductivity sigma and activation energy E A in the binary sodium silicate system in a wide composition range. The Anderson and Stuart model has been considered to describe the decreasing tendency of activation energy E A with alkali concentration in this system. In this analysis were considered experimental parameters, such as shear modulus G and relative dielectric permittivity epsilon. A general conductivity rule is found in 194 of 205 glasses, when one plots log sigma vs. E A/kB T, where kB is the Boltzmann constant and T is the absolute temperature. This fact means that the arrhenian relation has universal uniqueness of form sigma = sigma (E A,T) in wide Na2O composition range. The results also show that there is strong correlation by more than 19 orders of magnitude on conductivity with E A/kBT. An explanation for this behavior links ionic conductivity and microscopic structure. The problem of phase separation in this system is also considered.

Abstract Functional segmented polymer networks (FSPNs) were synthesised via free radical initiated copolymerisation of polytetrahydrofuran (PTHF) bis-macromonomers with vinylbenzyl chloride (VBCl). The purpose of this work was to create FSPNs, providing supports with a functional group that can be substituted and may serve to immobilise other reagents such as catalysts. After the preparation and detailed characterisation of several PTHF bis-macromonomers, FSPNs were prepared with varying molecular weight of the PTHF chain and varying PTHF/ PVBCl ratio. Measurements of the soluble fraction and elemental analyses demonstrated that FSPNs with a wide composition range could be prepared. From dynamic-mechanical and thermal analyses, it could be concluded that most FSPNs showed some degree of compatibility and complete absence of crystallinity. The mechanical properties of the FSPNs are directly related to their composition. The degree of substitution of all networks is close to quantitative.

ABSTRACTBulk amorphous Pd-Ni-P and Pd-Cu-P alloy rods with diameters ranging from 7 to 25 mm have been synthesized over a wide composition range using a fluxing technique. For most bulk amorphous Pd-Ni-P alloys, the difference ΔT = Tx - Tg between the crystallization temperature Tx and the glass transition temperature Tg is larger than 90 K, while for bulk amorphous Pd-Cu-P alloys, ΔT varies from 27 to 73 K. Pd40Ni40P20 has the highest glass formability, and 300-gram bulk amorphous cylinders, 25 mm in diameter and 50 mm in length, can be easily produced. This size, however, is not an upper limit. The paper presents the glass formation ranges for both ternary alloy systems and data on the thermal stability of the amorphous alloys, as well as their specific heat, density, and elastic properties.
