When dissimilar images are presented to each eye, the images will alternate every few seconds in a phenomenon known as binocular rivalry. Recent research has found evidence of a bias towards one image at the initial ‘onset’ period of rivalry that varies across the peripheral visual field. To determine the role that visual field location plays in and around the fovea at onset, trained observers were presented small orthogonal achromatic grating patches at various locations across the central 3° of visual space for 1-s and 60-s intervals. Results reveal stronger bias at onset than during continuous rivalry, and evidence of temporal hemifield dominance across observers, however, the nature of the hemifield effects differed between individuals and interacted with overall eye dominance. Despite using small grating patches, a high proportion of mixed percept was still reported, with more mixed percept at onset along the vertical midline, in general, and in increasing proportions with eccentricity in the lateral hemifields. Results show that even within the foveal range, onset rivalry bias varies across visual space, and differs in degree and sensitivity to biases in average dominance over continuous viewing.

Attention is the ubiquitous construct referring to the ability of the brain to focus resources on a subset of perceptual input which it is trying to process for a response. Attention has for a long time been studied with reference to its distribution across space where, for example, visual input from an attentionally monitored location is given preference over non-monitored (i.e. attended) locations. More recently, attention has been studied for its ability to select targets from among rapidly, sequentially presented non-targets at a fixed location, e.g. in visual space. The present chapter explores this latter function of attention for its relevance to behaviour. In so doing, it highlights what is becoming one of the most popular approaches to studying communication across the brain—oscillations—at various frequency ranges. In particular the authors discuss the alpha frequency band (8–12 Hz), where recent evidence points to an important role in the switching between processing external vs. internal events.

AbstractEncoding articulate speech is widely accepted as the principal (or sole) role of the frontal operculum. Clinical observations of speech apraxia have been confirmed by brain-imaging studies of speech production. We present evidence that the frontal operculum also programs limb movements. We argue that this area is a ventral counterpart of the dorsal premotor area. The two are functionally distinguished by specialization for somatic and visual space, respectively.

The problem in this research is how the role of graduate libraries in improving the achievement of ISI Yogyakarta graduate students and the obstacles faced by libraries. This type of research is qualitative using a descriptive approach. Data collection techniques used through interviews, observations and documentation. Data validity techniques use source triangulation. The data analysis techniques in this study used Creswell's theory of collecting and viewing data, coding data, describing data and interpreting data based on theme themes. The results of this study are: 1. In improving the achievement of graduate students, the library conducts socialization activities in groups when accepting new students and individually when students come to the library, for indirect socialization through social media such as Facebook and Whatsapp. 2. Implementation of the role of graduate libraries to improve student achievement is carried out through various activities such as special e-journal search services, international conferences in Asia Pacific, symposiums and training and book surgery. 3. The role of ISI Yogyakarta graduate library in accordance with the college library handbook is as a place to learn (education), a source of information through various primary and secondary collections and motivators for students who have difficulty in participating in studies or learning in isi Yogyakarta graduate program. Obstacles in carrying out various activity programs are human resource limitations and the need for rearrangement or interior design of the library (addition of audio visual space) so that it is more comfortable, the addition of collections related to art governance, best practice, and music partitur.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, research into the understanding of visual space in the arts and sciences narrowed the distinctions between architecture and the arts, contributing to a growing desire to unify all the senses in the production of more meaningful art and architecture. The Bauhaus, in its proposed synthesis of the arts, left with few examples of architecture, but the modern desire for the unification of the formal vocabulary of architecture and the arts persisted, and was advanced especially through the reduction and refinement of their elements. I argue that Max Bill, a Bauhaus graduate, realized this synthesis of the arts through his Concrete design method, which reconciled the rational and the intuitive through conceptual associations between different media. His approach to design resisted formalism and arbitrary decisions, and went far beyond the visual by producing designs which embraced functionality, creativity and simplicity, and unfolded in a diverse array of forms instead of repetitive formulas. To this day formalism and a superficial regard for aesthetics hinders discussion and the exchange of concepts between art and architecture, especially regarding the design process. This paper will explore the methods and conceptual underpinnings of Max Bill’s sculptural work and architecture through case studies from 1932 through 1968.
