Since the introduction of Hyper-Rayleigh scattering (HRS) as a measurement technique for the first hyperpolarizability of molecules in solution,1 the importance of fluctuations was realized.2 For isotropic solutions, a combination of the spatial and temporal orientational fluctuations causes the instantaneous and local deviation from macroscopic centrosymmetry, necessary to observe a second-order signal. The fluctuations in the spatial orientational distribution function of nonlinear optical chromophores cause an HRS signal that fluctuates as a function of position in solid samples. The correlation length, characterizing the decay of the autocorrelation function of this fluctuating signal, indicates the degree of spatial correlation between these chromophores. The development of femtosecond HRS was instrumental for the study of orientational correlations.3

Compounds 1 were synthesized, in good to excellent yields (72-87%), through condensation of formyl-arylthiophene precursors 2 with 1,2-diaminoanthraquinone in ethanol at reflux, followed by cyclisation of the imine intermediate with Pb(OAc)4 in acetic acid at room temperature. Evaluation of the thermal, linear and NLO properties of these compounds was carried out. The  values of chromophores 1, measured by hyper-Rayleigh scattering (HRS) technique, are several times larger (49-67) than that of the standard reference molecule p-nitroaniline (pNA). Due to their excellent thermal stability, (Td = 341-446 oC), and good NLO properties, arylthienyl-imidazo-anthraquinones 1 could be used as new efficient and thermally stable NLO materials.

In electro-optic (EO) materials, realization of large EO coefficients for organic EO materials requires the simultaneous optimization of chromophore first hyperpolarizability, acentric order, molecular shape etc.

The second-order nonlinear optical properties of polystyrene particles coated with two well-characterized nonlinear optical chromophores with different molecular symmetry have been studied. From the markedly different depolarization ratio for the hyper-Rayleigh scattering from the molecular scatterers and from the largely different second-harmonic intensity from particles coated with these chromophores, we conjecture that contributions from antisymmetric molecular electronic states are necessary to observe second-order nonlinear effects from centrosymmetrical particles in isotropic solution.
