In this study, the modification effects and mechanism of manganese (Mn) and ultrasonic vibration (USV) on the needle-like Fe-containing intermetallic compounds of Al-20Si-xFe-2.0Cu-0.4Mg-1.0Ni (x=1, 2 wt.%) alloy have been studied respectively. The effect of Fe-containing phases on volume fraction of hard phases is also investigated. The results show that the mechanism and effect of Fe-containing intermetallic compounds improved by Mn are in close relationship with Fe content. Mn can promote to form less harmful α-Al15(Fe,Mn)3Si2 phase, or replace some Fe atoms of β-Al5FeSi and δ-Al4FeSi2 according to different Fe content. When USV was applied to this alloy containing 2%Fe near liquidus temperature, most of the acicular β phases formed in traditional process are substituted by fine plate δ phases. With the combined effects of 0.5%Mn and USV, the acicular β phases are almost repressed and the Fe-containing phases exist in form of fine Al4(Fe,Mn)Si2 and Al5(Fe,Mn)Si particles about 20~30μm. Consequently, the total volume fraction of hard phases which are composed of primary silicon particles and Fe-containing phases increases significantly.

The Tm2Fe19-xMnx (x = 0 - 1.5) and Tm2Fe16, Tm2Fe17, Tm2Fe18, Tm2Fe19 intermetallic compounds were synthesized and their magnetic and structural properties were studied. Magnetic measurements, X-ray and neutron diffraction investigations were used. The compounds crystallize in a disordered variant of the hexagonal Th2Ni17-type structure. The lattice parameters a, c increases in the Tm2Fe19-xMnx system, whereas c decreases and a increases in the Tm2Fe19 - Tm2Fe16 system as Fe content decreases. The temperatures of ferromagnetic ordering and spin-reorientation increase as Fe content decreases in these systems. Apparently, the decrease of occupation of defected dumbbell Fe (4e) site causes these regularities.

In this study, the effect of small additions of lithium on the microstructure and morphology of Fe-containing intermetallic compounds in A360 alloy has been investigated. Different Fe contents (1, 1.5 and 2%) were added into A360 alloy, and Li concentrations also varied from 0 to 0.5 wt. %. The image analysis results showed that, the maximum length of β-Al5FeSi plate in Li-modified specimens is changed significantly in comparison with non-modified ones. It is evident that the maximum reduction in the average length of Fe containing platelets occurs in specimens with 2% Fe. Also, the lowest changes in the length of intermetallic phases -as Fe content decreases- occur in the 0.5 wt% Li. At higher Li concentrations, the presence of Al-Li-Si intermetallics in the microstructure can provide undesirable condition. This intermetallic can be so damaging in mechanical properties especially in coarse shapes.
