ABSTRACTHydrogen absorption and desorption isotherms have been measured on ballmilled mixtures of LiH+Si powders to evaluate the thermodynamic parameters of these reversible reactions. The phase compositions at the various stages of reaction have been examined by Magic Angle Spinning-Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (MAS-NMR) of the 7Li, 1H, and 29Si nuclei and powder x-ray diffraction (XRD). The initial mixtures of LiH and Si were found to convert into known Li-Si silicide intermetallics (i.e., Li12Si7, Li7Si3, and Li13Si4) as well as providing evidence for a previously unknown ternary Li-Si-H phase as hydrogen was first desorbed and then absorbed. While the absorption reactions are reversible over portions of the Li-Si-H composition range, incomplete recovery of the original LiH + Si phases was also observed under some test conditions.

ABSTRACTMultilayered samples of Ti-Pd with linearly varying compositions were irradiated by Xe ions at 600 keV. The induced microstructures were studied by using transmission electron microscopy and Rutherford backscattering. Mixing was found to be complete over the entire composition range, resulting in amorphous or amorphous plus crystalline structures except at the palladium-rich end, where a crystalline Pd-Ti solid solution was obtained. This is consistent with the high equilibrium solubility of Ti in Pd. In addition, significant coarsening of the microstructure caused by irradiation was found in this solid solution region.Friction measurements were carried out in air and water by using a polytetrafluoroethylene pin as a counterpart. In air the friction coefficient was independent of composition and microstructure after about 2000 passes. In water, however, after 600 passes the friction coefficient reached a steady-state value with a pronounced minimum over the amorphous region. This property was unchanged throughout the remaining 10000 passes.

Nickel films formed on the surface of zirconium alloys are often used to protect materials against hydrogen penetration. Hydrogen adsorption on nickel is faster since the latter actively interacts with hydrogen, oxidizes and forms a protective film. The goal of the study is to develop a method providing control of hydrogen absorption by nickel films during vacuum-magnetron sputtering and hydrogenation via measuring thermoEMF. Zirconium alloy E110 was saturated from the gas phase with hydrogen at a temperature of 350°C and a pressure of 2 atm. A specialized Rainbow Spectrum unit was used for coating. It is shown that a nickel film present on the surface significantly affects the hydrogen penetration into the alloy. A coating with a thickness of more than 2 μm deposited by magnetron sputtering on the surface of a zirconium alloy with 1% Nb, almost completely protects the alloy against hydrogen penetration. The magnitude of thermoemf depends on the hydrogen concentration in the zirconium alloy and film thickness. An analysis of the hysteresis width of the thermoEMF temperature loop and a method for determining the effective activation energy of the conductivity of a hydrogenated material coated with a nickel film are presented. The results of the study can be used in assessing the hydrogen concentration and, hence, corrosion protection of the material.
