Abstract Let V be an infinite-dimensional vector space over a field F and let $I(V)$ be the inverse semigroup of all injective partial linear transformations on V. Given $\alpha \in I(V)$ , we denote the domain and the range of $\alpha $ by ${\mathop {\textrm {dom}}}\,\alpha $ and ${\mathop {\textrm {im}}}\,\alpha $ , and we call the cardinals $g(\alpha )={\mathop {\textrm {codim}}}\,{\mathop {\textrm {dom}}}\,\alpha $ and $d(\alpha )={\mathop {\textrm {codim}}}\,{\mathop {\textrm {im}}}\,\alpha $ the ‘gap’ and the ‘defect’ of $\alpha $ . We study the semigroup $A(V)$ of all injective partial linear transformations with equal gap and defect and characterise Green’s relations and ideals in $A(V)$ . This is analogous to work by Sanwong and Sullivan [‘Injective transformations with equal gap and defect’, Bull. Aust. Math. Soc.79 (2009), 327–336] on a similarly defined semigroup for the set case, but we show that these semigroups are never isomorphic.

Given an infinite-dimensional vector space V, we consider the semigroup GS (m, n) consisting of all injective linear α: V → V for which codim ran α = n, where dim V = m ≥ n ≥ ℵ0. This is a linear version of the well-known Baer–Levi semigroup BL (p, q) defined on an infinite set X, where |X| = p ≥ q ≥ ℵ0. We show that, although the basic properties of GS (m, n) are the same as those of BL (p, q), the two semigroups are never isomorphic. We also determine all left ideals of GS (m, n) and some of its maximal subsemigroups; in this, we follow previous work on BL (p, q) by Sutov and Sullivan as well as Levi and Wood.

AbstractLet k be an infinite cardinal, F a field, and let GL(k, F) be the group of all non-singular linear transformations on a ki-dimensional vector space V over F. Various examples are given of maximal subgroups of GL(k, F). These include (i) stabilizers of families of subspaces of V which are like filters or ideals on a set, (ii) almost stabilizers of certain subspaces of V, (iii) almost stabilizers of a direct decomposition of V into two k-dimensional subspaces. It is also noted that GL(k, F) is not the union of any chain of length k of proper subgroups.

In this paper we characterise the linear transformations of an infinite-dimensional vector space that can be written as the product of nilpotent transformations. This and a linear version of Malcev's congruence on transformation semigroups are then used to construct a new class of congruence-free semigroups.

Suppose V is an infinite-dimensional vector space and let T(V) denote the semigroup (under composition) of all linear transformations of V. In this paper, we study the semigroup OM(p,q) consisting of all α ∈ T(V) for which dim ker α ≥ q and the semigroup OE(p,q) of all α ∈ T(V) for which codim ran α ≥ q, where dim V = p ≥ q ≥ ℵ0. It is not difficult to see that OM(p,q) and OE(p,q) are a right ideal and a left ideal of T(V), respectively, and using these facts, we show that they belong to the class of all semigroups whose sets of bi-ideals and quasi-ideals coincide. Also, we describe Green's relations and the two-sided ideals of each semigroup, and determine its maximal regular subsemigroup. Finally, we determine some maximal right cancellative subsemigroups of OE(p,q).
