The Vice-President of the International Committee of the Red Cross, Mr. Samuel Gonard, returned on February 10 to Geneva, after a four week tour in the Middle East. He visited the ICRC delegations in Saudi Arabia and in the Yemen and in particular inspected the field hospital at Uqhd in the North of the Yemen, where wounded and sick victims of the war from both sides are cared for.

In its number for June 1968, the International Review mentioned that 118 States were parties to the Geneva Conventions of August 12, 1949. Since then, the International Committee of the Red Cross has been informed by the Federal Political Department in Berne of the participation by the Kingdom of Lesotho in these Conventions.

The last issue of the International Review contained an article on the book which Mr. Pierre Boissier has just had published: Histoire du Comité international de la Croix-Rouge. The first volume, in French, is available from the Editions Plon, Paris. The German edition is still being prepared.

Reuniting of families.—In spite of increased tension in the Middle East, the International Committee of the Red Cross has managed, through its delegations in Cairo and Tel Aviv, to get 143 persons across the Suez canal. This “reuniting of families” operation took place on December 30 at el Qantara.

Assistance to Refugees in Borneo.—In compliance with the Indonesian Red Cross request to the International Committee of the Red Cross in February, Mr. André Durand, delegate general for Asia, was in Indonesia from March 7-25 to examine the critical situation of some 50,000 people of Chinese descent who fled from their villages last October after violent demonstrations against them.

AbstractThe International Review of the Red Cross (formerly the Bulletin Internationale des Sociétés de Secours aux Militaires Blessés) is celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2019, making it the oldest of the general publications produced by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). Originally created as a communication tool for the entire International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, the Review rapidly changed its course to become first the primary mouthpiece of the ICRC for many years, and finally an academic journal. This article will retrace the history of this evolution, during which, under cover of humanitarianism, political factors played a significant role.

The regional delegate of the International Committee of the Red Cross for Southern Africa was in Mozambique from 1 to 18 December 1974. At Lourenço Marques he met high government authorities, including the Prime Minister of the transitional Government, and local Red Cross leaders.
