Migration aspirations from a youth perspective: focus groups with returnees and youth in Mali

AbstractMali has one of the highest migration rates in Africa, but we still know very little about the processes and drivers of migration – particularly in the context of the current political crisis. This article draws on 27 focus groups with 220 returnees and male youth respondents conducted in the summer of 2018. Respondents cite underemployment and the inability to provide for relatives as well as a feeling of hopelessness about a future life in Mali as drivers of migration. Returnees report that the voyage was more difficult than anticipated. However, even with knowledge of the significant risks they face, most (68%) returnees express a desire to try to migrate again: this is particularly true for returned migrants who failed in an attempt to reach Europe (89%). The research illustrates very different experiences for migrants attempting to reach Europe and those with goals of intra-African migration.

The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the effectiveness of a mental skills training (MST) program for male youth elite rugby athletes. Three focus groups were held with 21 under-16 male rugby athletes and four male coaches involved in the MST program to examine the quality of service delivery, athlete responses to the MST program, the mental qualities used by athletes, and its perceived influence on athlete performance. Following inductive-deductive content analysis, 40 subcategories and 16 categories emerged. Participants believed the MST program to be an interactive, well-planned program that increased athlete understanding of MST methods and awareness of MST strategies to manage rugby performance. Athletes thought it important that their coaches develop a greater knowledge and understanding of MST methods. Finally, athletes perceived the MST skills and methods they learnt through the MST program were transferable to other sports and areas of their life outside of rugby (e.g., school).

Zusammenfassung. Die Zusammenarbeit mit Eltern wird in Bildungsplänen und Kompetenzbeschreibungen als professionelle Aufgabe frühpädagogischer Fachkräfte definiert. Um einen Paradigmenwechsel anzuzeigen, verwenden zahlreiche Autoren inzwischen nicht mehr den Begriff Elternarbeit, sondern sprechen von Bildungs- und Erziehungspartnerschaft. Doch wird die Kooperation tatsächlich partnerschaftlich umgesetzt? Um der Forschungsfrage nachzugehen, welche handlungsleitenden Orientierungen frühpädagogische Fachkräfte in der Zusammenarbeit mit Eltern im Kontext kompensatorischer Sprachfördermaßnahmen haben, werden neun Fälle (die aus sechs Interviews und zwei Focus Groups generiert wurden) anhand der Dokumentarischen Methode interpretiert. Es zeigt sich, dass die Förderkräfte auf der Ebene der Einstellung die normativen Setzungen um Partnerschaftlichkeit teilen. Die Rekonstruktion der impliziten Wissensbestände offenbart jedoch, dass die Kooperation hierarchisch und teilweise als Machtbeziehung konstruiert wird. Es lässt sich eine grundlegende Diskrepanz zwischen den expliziten und den impliziten Orientierungen rekonstruieren, die sich als Differenz zwischen Norm und Habitus zeigt.
