Along SE coast of Australia a variety of Holocene barriers composed of siliceous sand and shell detritus occur within bedrock-confined embayments. On basis of morphostratigraphy 4 barrier types are recognized: prograded, stationary, receded and episodic transgressive dunes. Several subtypes are also distinguished. Composite bay barriers involving partial eolian reworking of a prograded barrier constitute most complex examples of Holocene depositional sequences on this coast. The present list is a preliminary attempt at defining the age structure of a group of such barriers (excepting receded type). Ages are reported in conventional years bp. Text references to ages and age ranges are environmental effect corrected ages bp* and yr* (as recommended by Stuiver and Polach, 1977), using 450 ± 35 yr as postulated by Gillespie and Polach (in press) in order to relate Australian oceanic environment shells to terrestrial environment wood. δ13C errors, where based on measurement, are always ± 0.2% and are not shown in the text; when based on estimated values (Est) the error is given.

Shells in beach-ridge and chenier Holocene deposits from the Gulf of Carpentaria, Queensland, have been dated by radiocarbon. Possible contamination of carbonate by post-depositional diagenetic processes, isotopic fractionation, ocean reservoir environmental effect, and association of biological age of sample material with depositional event have been examined in order to validate dating of samples from this environment. A numerical methodology used for comparing ‘groups’ of 14C dates strongly supports morphostratigraphic evidence that time discontinuities occur within both chenier and beach-ridge sequences. Four episodes are recognized in each area, all younger than ca 5800 years ago, the time when sea level reached its postglacial maximum in the Gulf of Carpentaria. To some extent, these episodes are out of phase, reflecting different modes of strandline accumulation.

This study examined genetic and environmental influences on older women’s personal goals by using data from the Finnish Twin Study on Aging. The interview for the personal goals was completed by 67 monozygotic (MZ) pairs and 75 dizygotic (DZ) pairs. The tetrachoric correlations for personal goals related to health and functioning, close relationships, and independent living were higher in MZ than DZ twins, indicating possible genetic influence. The pattern of tetrachoric correlations for personal goals related to cultural activities, care of others, and physical exercise indicated environmental influence. For goals concerning health and functioning, independent living, and close relationships, additive genetic effect accounted for about half of the individual variation. The rest was the result of a unique environmental effect. Goals concerning physical exercise and care of others showed moderate common environmental effect, while the rest of the variance was the result of a unique environmental effect. Personal goals concerning cultural activities showed unique environmental effects only.

An assemblage of 366 lithics was recovered during the characterisation of archaeological deposits, from deposits which appear to represent a scooped occupation. Analysis of the assemblage and a radiocarbon date range of 6355-6012 cal BC indicate that it belongs to the Mesolithic. The site is significant because it is the first Mesolithic material to have been recovered by excavation in the Girvan area. It also provides additional evidence for a class of semipermanent Mesolithic sites consisting of shallow scoops surrounded by turf or earthen banks.

Excavations near two upstanding hut circles overlooking Machrie Moor revealed traces of early agriculture in the form of narrow, or 'cord' rig associated with a small cairn. Sealed beneath this were traces of earlier agricultural activity in the form of ard marks. A radiocarbon date from a basal sample of the overlying peat spanned the fifth to seventh centuries AD.

The article explores ways of forming a modern concept of rational nature management of agricultural waste. The analysis of the nomenclature of agricultural waste was carried out, their influence on the environmental situation was studied. The modern technologies of rational nature management of agricultural waste are systematized, the most promising areas of waste recycling are identified. The ecological effect of the application of technologies for the rational environmental management of agricultural waste was studied.
