Peer interactions of autistic children and adolescents

AbstractTwo observational studies of verbal, high-functioning children and adolescents with autism; nonautistic, behaviorally disordered youngsters of equivalent verbal skills and chronological age; and verbal age-matched normally developing students during integrated summer day camps are reported. In the first study, observations were made of spontaneous peer interaction and play over the course of 2 weeks of day camp. The eight autistic subjects were consistently more likely to not be interacting and less likely to be engaged in any purposeful activity than the 16 other children. During the 2 weeks, time interacting and purposeful activity increased overall. In the second study, the quality of spontaneous peer-directed initiations was observed during free time in similar day camps the following summer. The 11 autistic children and adolescents produced fewer initiations than did the 20 other children and were less likely to smile or coordinate several behaviors with eye contact during an initiation. Autistic subjects were consistently more likely not to receive a response to their initiation than the other groups, although there was no identifiable relationship between the quality of the initiation and the likelihood of it receiving a response.

This paper aimed to discuss the intervention effects of physical activities on children and adolescents with autism with a meta-analysis so as to serve as a reference to further relevant research on the same topic. As for research methods, by searching in CNKI (China National Knowledge Infrastructure), WanFang data, VIP Database for Chinese Technical Periodicals, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and other databases, this study collected randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on the intervention of physical activities on children and adolescents with autism and used Review Manager 5.3 software to process and analyze the outcome indicators of the literature. As for the result, a total of 12 papers and 492 research targets were selected. The results of the meta-analysis show that physical activity had a significant positive impact on social interaction ability, communication ability, motor skills, and autism degree of autistic children as well as the social skills and communication skills of autistic adolescents. On the other hand, physical activity had no significant effect on the stereotyped behavior of autistic children and adolescents. In conclusion, physical activity intervention is beneficial to children and adolescents with autism, and continuous physical activity intervention can produce greater intervention effect.

Objective: This study evaluates self- and proxy-reported health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). The study also compares HRQOL in ASD patients with a healthy control sample and a psychiatric reference sample. Method: 42 children and adolescents (39 male, mean age: 12.7 ± 2.6 years, mean IQ: 100.5 ± 20.7) with the diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their parents completed the Inventory for the Assessment of Quality of Life in Children and Adolescents (ILK). Results: Mean ILK LQ 0–28 scores were 20.6 (± 4.6) (self-report version) and 18.2 (± 4.0) (proxy version). Compared to a reference sample, mean ILK scores from the ASD sample were at the 47th percentile (self-report) and the 33rd percentile (proxy). Compared to children and adolescents with psychiatric disorders, self-reported ILK scores correlated with the 69th percentile, and proxy-reported ILK scores correlated with the 67th percentile. Self-reported HRQOL was significantly higher than proxy-reported HRQOL. No significant correlation was found between HRQOL and age, IQ, or autistic symptoms. Conclusions: HRQOL in children and adolescents with ASD seems to be better than in other psychiatric disorders, but lower than in healthy controls.
