AbstractLate-type low surface brightness (LSB) disk galaxies are common in the local universe and appear dynamically and chemically under evolved compared to their high surface brightness (HSB) counterparts. We have utilized multi-wavelength imaging and photometry of three edge-on, low-mass LSB disk galaxies to investigate the dust distribution in such systems. Through the use of Monte Carlo radiation transfer models to interpret the data, we find that the dust disk appears to have a vertical scale height similar to the stellar disk. This is in contrast to previous findings from HSB galaxies, where the dust is believed to be more concentrated in the galactic mid-plane. We believe the change in the relative scale heights of the dust and stellar disks is likely associated with the increased stability of the ISM against vertical collapse and the thin nature of the stellar disks.

AbstractExtremely red halos have been detected around high surface brightness (HSB) disk galaxies and blue compact galaxies. We analyse the halo emission of a sample of 970 stacked edge-on low surface brightness (LSB) galaxies in the SDSS (DR4) down to μg ~ 30 mag arcsec−2. These are divided by g − r colour limits into a “blue” Sample A (336 galaxies), “yellow” Sample B (318 galaxies) and “red” Sample C (316 galaxies). The gri colours indicate a prominent red excess in the polar direction, strongly deviating from any normal stellar population.

AbstractThis is a report on HI observations of newly discovered nearby dwarf galaxies, most of which of low surface brightness, from the first section of the Karachentsev catalog. Observations were performed using the 100-m radiotelescope at Effelsberg, the Nançay radiotelescope, and the compact array of the Australia Telescope. We observed 220 galaxies with a detection rate of about 60%. 35 of the observed galaxies are located within the Local Volume (i.e., within 10 Mpc). The smallest detected galaxies have diameters around 0.3 kpc and HI-masses of a few times 106 solar masses. We confirm a correlation between HI column density and surface brightness of gas-rich disk galaxies.

AbstractWe present the size-luminosity relation (SLR) for disk galaxies observed in eight clusters from the ESO Distant Cluster Survey (EDisCS). These clusters, at redshifts 0.4 < z < 0.8, were observed with the Hubble Space Telescope's Advanced Camera for Surveys. While we observe a change in the SLR with redshift, namely that there is an absence of low surface brightness galaxies at high redshift, we demonstrate that this could be a product of selection effects and thus is not a confirmation of evolution. We also compare the SLR for cluster and field galaxies in each redshift bin and see no significant effects of environment on the SLR.

ABSTRACT We investigate the formation and properties of low surface brightness galaxies (LSBGs) with M* &gt; 109.5 M⊙ in the eagle hydrodynamical cosmological simulation. Galaxy surface brightness depends on a combination of stellar mass surface density and mass-to-light ratio (M/L), such that low surface brightness is strongly correlated with both galaxy angular momentum (low surface density) and low specific star formation rate (high M/L). This drives most of the other observed correlations between surface brightness and galaxy properties, such as the fact that most LSBGs have low metallicity. We find that LSBGs are more isolated than high-surface-brightness galaxies (HSBGs), in agreement with observations, but that this trend is driven entirely by the fact that LSBGs are unlikely to be close-in satellites. The majority of LSBGs are consistent with a formation scenario in which the galaxies with the highest angular momentum are those that formed most of their stars recently from a gas reservoir co-rotating with a high-spin dark matter halo. However, the most extended LSBG discs in EAGLE, which are comparable in size to observed giant LSBGs, are built up via mergers. These galaxies are found to inhabit dark matter haloes with a higher spin in their inner regions (&lt;0.1r200c), even when excluding the effects of baryonic physics by considering matching haloes from a dark-matter-only simulation with identical initial conditions.

Determinations of the plasma diagnostics and chemical compositions of planetary nebulae require ultimately high dispersion spectra. For objects of high surface brightness the Hamilton Echelle Spectrograph at Lick Observatory is satisfactory for the region 3650–10100Å which involves the 168th to 56th echelle orders. For a slit width of 640 μm amounting to 1.15 arcsec at the Coude focus, the actual spectral resolution (FWHM) is about 0.2Å at 8850Å. The length of the slit is chosen as 4.0 arcsec. Hyung (1994) & Aller (1994) describe the observing procedure. Since the Hamilton echelle was designed primarily for star-like sources, it is not useful for extended low surface brightness PN. The earlier observations were obtained with an 800 × 800 chip that did not cover the echelle field, so several settings were needed. Later, we used a slower 2048 × 2048 chip which covered the whole field and was somewhat more efficient at longer wavelengths. The program has been completed and definitive measurements have obtained for NGC 2440, NGC 6543, NGC 6741, NGC 6818, NGC 7026, NGC 7662, and Hu 1-2. All of these PN display particularly rich, interesting spectra. Previously observed and published objects include IC 351, IC 418, IC 2149, IC 4997, NGC 6567, NGC 6572, NGC 6790, NGC 6886, NGC 7009, BD +30 3639, & Hubble 12. NGC 6884 is in press. Additional nebulae which are yet to be discussed are IC 4634, IC 4846, IC 5117, NGC 6210, & NGC 6803.

We investigate the relation between the central velocity dispersion, σc, and the circular velocity, Vcirc, in galaxies. in addition to previously obtained data, we consider an observationally homogeneus sample of 52 high surface brightness and 11 low surface brightness spiral galaxies. We performed a straight line regression analysis in a linear scale, finding a good fit, also for low σc galaxies, always rejected in the previous studies. Low surface brightness galaxies seem to behave differently, showing either higher values of Vcirc or lower values of σc with respect to their high surface brightness counterparts.
