The narrow bandwidth radiation of a tunable dye laser is used to excite selectively the quasilinear absorption bands exhibited by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH's) isolated in vapor-deposited n-alkane matrices at 15 K. The analytical utility of matrix isolation Shpol'skii fluorometry for the resolution of multicomponent PAH samples is investigated, using nonpolar derivatives of benzo[ a]pyrene as prototypes. Quantitative aspects, including the absence of aggregation and energy-transfer phenomena, also are discussed.
