We show that phenynyl ligand could readily bind to colloidal Au nanoparticles. By real-time monitoring the SERS during ligand exchange, the relative strength of phenynyls, thiols and PVP ligands, and different phenynyls were successfully ranked.

We show that active surface growth is an effective method to create structural variety in the appending domain of Au seeds. The dynamic competition between the growth sites led to different Au hats on seeds.

Plasmonic Au nanoparticles inject electrons into TiO2 and reduce water to hydrogen at a Pt cathode. Positive charges left in the Au nanoparticles are extracted by NiO and used for methanol oxidation.

A semiconductor fabricated by embedding plasmonic Au nanoparticles into CdS exhibits a high activity and stability for photocatalytic H2evolution. This composite structure could take full advantage of electromagnetic fields at the surface of the Au nanoparticles under visible light illumination.
