For the production of low density polyethylene, ethylene has to be compressed up to 3,500 bar. To manage these pressures appropriate compressor designs are selected. In recent years, the size of these plants has increased up to 400 kt/a. The increased mass flow results in increased dimensions required for all compressor parts. This paper discusses the challenges of the sizing and design of the compressors for such large-scale plants.
