Managers have to make decisions several times a day. The decision-making process can be defined as an essential activity realized by managers every day. Decisions can be implemented intuitively, or by using relevant decision-making methods. This depends on the nature of the decision, as well as the intensity of its possible future effects. The theory of decision-making can be defined as a relatively young discipline. It can be stated that decision-making is no longer an intuitive process. Most decision-making situations are of a multiple criteria character. In this contribution, the authors focus on multiple-criteria decision-making, to which several methods can be applied. In the practical part, the authors use Saaty's method, also known as the Analytic Hierarchy Process. Saaty is considered to be the most important researcher dealing with the issue of multiple-criteria decision-making. The set multiple-criteria decision-making problem was to choose one business partner out of eight under consideration. The decision-making criteria included selected financial indicators and non-financial criteria. The aim of the contribution is to use the Analytic Hierarchy Process to assess potential business partners and to select an optimal candidate.

Este trabajo recoge brevemente el concepto, la evolución histórica y las diferentes escuelas de una de las partes de la Investigación Operativa más fructífera y con mayor difusión de los últimos 45 años: la Decisión Multicriterio. Así mismo, analiza la evolución que el método científico ha seguido en este periodo de tiempo y cuáles son las nuevas orientaciones que presenta en el contexto de la Sociedad del Conocimiento. Finalmente, se incluyen una serie de ideas sobre cuáles pueden ser algunos de los retos futuros en el campo de la toma de decisiones multicriterio (TDMC), en particular en el contexto de una de las aproximaciones más populares: el Proceso Analítico Jerárquico (AHP). Tres problemas fundamentales, ya vislumbrados para esta escuela de pensamiento por su creador, necesitan ser abordados como futuros retos en el campo multicriterio. Este trabajo se ha dedicado a la memoria del profesor Thomas L. Saaty, el autor de AHP y uno de los matemáticos más brillantes e ingeniosos de los últimos 60 años, quien acaba de fallecer en agosto de 2017 a los 91 años de edad.

 A qualidade dos serviços é uma construção abstrata e indescritível devido a três características: intangibilidade, inseparabilidade de produção e consumo e, heterogeneidade. Dessa forma, define-se a qualidade dos serviços como aquela percebida pelo cliente. Neste contexto, este trabalho teve o objetivo de avaliar a qualidade dos serviços em um hotel de grande porte localizado em Santa Catarina – Brasil, contando com a participação de 187 hóspedes. Utilizou-se o método Servqual para coletar os dados em um questionário baseado nas dimensões da qualidade. Para o cálculo dos pesos da expectativa e da percepção foi utilizado o método Fuzzy AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process - FAHP). Como resultado, são apresentados os aspectos onde a expectativa dos hóspedes em relação ao serviço prestado é maior do que a realidade encontrada, permitindo, dessa forma, que a empresa alinhe de forma estratégica seus futuros investimentos.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to develop a new failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA) framework for evaluation, prioritization and improvement of failure modes. Design/methodology/approach – A hybrid multiple criteria decision-making method combining VIKOR, decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) and analytic hierarchy process (AHP) is used to rank the risk of the failure modes identified in FMEA. The modified VIKOR method is employed to determine the effects of failure modes on together. Then the DEMATEL technique is used to construct the influential relation map among the failure modes and causes of failures. Finally, the AHP approach based on the DEMATEL is utilized to obtain the influential weights and give the prioritization levels for the failure modes. Findings – A case study of diesel engine’s turbocharger system is provided to illustrate the potential application and benefits of the proposed FMEA approach. Results show that the new risk priority model can be effective in helping analysts find the high risky failure modes and create suitable maintenance strategies. Practical implications – The proposed FMEA can overcome the shortcomings and improve the effectiveness of the traditional FMEA. Particularly, the dependence and interactions between different failure modes and effects have been addressed by the new failure analysis method. Originality/value – This paper presents a systemic analytical model for FMEA. It is able to capture the complex interrelationships among various failure modes and effects and provide guidance to analysts by setting the suitable maintenance strategies to improve the safety and reliability of complex systems.

Abstract The objective of this article is to select land for commercial buildings in Rio de Janeiro city using multiple criteria decision-making techniques. The techniques used were based on the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Fuzzy Logic methods. These methods were chosen because of functionality, flexibility and great application in engineering problems for decision making involving multiple criteria. Its application was made through an opinion survey with expert builders, where 6 (six) factors for evaluation were selected in 10 (ten) commercial land alternatives. For the analytical operation of the methods, the software used were: Super Decisions and MATLAB®, respectively for each method, presenting the factors classified, in order of priority, in the selection of land, and ranking of the alternatives according to the defined scenario, facilitating in this way the process of selection of land for buildings, establishing a scientific way for the decision process.

Clean domestic energy is an attractive option, especially for developing countries. Wind has been one of the most appealing renewable energy sources for those as of the beginning of the 20th century. This study focuses on an important work item of the establishment phase of this important energy source: power plant site selection. Three approaches were examined based on multiple-criteria decision-making methods. Stochastic multi-criteria acceptability analysis (a simulation-based approach with different kinds of uncertain information), analytic hierarchy process (a conventional deterministic approach), and AHP-SMAA (a hybrid approach) were applied separately in Turkey. In terms of novelty, analyses were conducted both with (analytic hierarchy process) and without (stochastic multi-criteria acceptability analysis) the preference information of the decision makers. The unique hybrid method integrates stochastic multi-criteria acceptability analysis with analytic hierarchy process to allow the simulation-based experiments with deterministic variables. As a result of the approaches, the same region (Burhaniye-Pelitköy) showed up as the optimal site to establish wind power plants at every turn. The techniques are globally applicable as long as the computational data and all parameters are gathered completely.

The aim of this paper is to develop a methodology for the prioritization of sewer rehabilitation projects for Algiers (Algeria) sewer networks to support the National Sanitation Office in its challenge to make decisions on prioritization of sewer rehabilitation projects. The methodology applies multiple-criteria decision making. The study includes 47 projects (collectors) and 12 criteria to evaluate them. These criteria represent the different issues considered in the prioritization of the projects, which are structural, hydraulic, environmental, financial, social and technical. The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) is used to determine weights of the criteria and the Preference Ranking Organization Method for Enrichment Evaluations (PROMETHEE II) method is used to obtain the final ranking of the projects. The model was verified using the sewer data of Algiers. The results have shown that the method can be used for prioritizing sewer rehabilitation projects.
