Joint models of longitudinal and survival outcomes have gained much popularity in recent years, both in applications and in methodological development. This type of modelling is usually characterised by two submodels, one longitudinal (e.g., mixed-effects model) and one survival (e.g., Cox model), which are connected by some common term. Naturally, sharing information makes the inferential process highly time-consuming. In particular, the Bayesian framework requires even more time for Markov chains to reach stationarity. Hence, in order to reduce the modelling complexity while maintaining the accuracy of the estimates, we propose a two-stage strategy that first fits the longitudinal submodel and then plug the shared information into the survival submodel. Unlike a standard two-stage approach, we apply a correction by incorporating an individual and multiplicative fixed-effect with informative prior into the survival submodel. Based on simulation studies and sensitivity analyses, we empirically compare our proposal with joint specification and standard two-stage approaches. The results show that our methodology is very promising, since it reduces the estimation bias compared to the other two-stage method and requires less processing time than the joint specification approach.

This paper proposes a new topology for ac-to-ac power conversion, which is a three-stage conversion. It comprises of a diode rectifier (ac-to-dc), a buck- boost converter (dc-to-dc) and anH-bridge inverter (dc-to-ac) working as an ac chopper. The topology works as V/f drive wherein the frequency is varied by the buck-boost converter and the voltage is varied by the inverter, which is used as a chopper. Thus, it provides variable output voltage and frequency for all three- phases, which can be used for V/f control of induction motor. As compared to the conventional two-stage conversion i.e. ac-dc-ac (ac-to-ac conversion with intermediate stiff dc-link), proposed topology has advantage of improved THD in output voltage, as the input to the inverter is not a stiffed dc but it is a pulsating dc, provided from output of buck-boost converter. Moreover the blocking voltage of each switch of inverter is not constant voltage but varies according to the pulsating input of inverter, thus the stress across switch, as well as machine winding will reduce as compared to two stage conversion system. The proposed scheme offers linear variation of output voltage from zero to rated, avoiding nonlinear overmodulation range used in conventional inverters. The simulation studies are carried out in Matlab/Simulink 2014 and various results are presented.

Biomass gasification is the devolatilization and incomplete combustion of biomass resulting in the production of a combustible gas mixture including carbon monoxide (CO), hydrogen (H2) methane (CH4), and traces of other hydrocarbons (CnHm), and referred to as producer gas. Producer gas can be cleaned and then used in various engines or can be converted to various biofuels. This paper presents an experimental and simulation-based evaluation of producer gas quality resulting from corn kernel gasification in a two-stage downdraft gasifier. Test conditions were selected, based on the results of previous studies, to yield high conversion efficiency and low tar production. Experimental tests were performed with an air flow of 25 Nm3/h and with 80% of the air supplied to the first gasification stage. Simulations based on a chemical and thermal equilibrium model were carried out to examine the effect of equivalence ratio (ER) changes. Both the experimental and modelling results show that using a two-stage air supply leads to a significant reduction in the tar content of the producer gas, while maintaining a high gasification efficiency.

We are studying the crystallization and annealing behavior of high performance polymers, like poly(p-pheny1ene sulfide) PPS, and poly-(etheretherketone), PEEK. Our purpose is to determine whether PPS, which is similar in many ways to PEEK, undergoes reorganization during annealing. In an effort to address the issue of reorganization, we are studying solution grown single crystals of PPS as model materials.Observation of solution grown PPS crystals has been reported. Even from dilute solution, embrionic spherulites and aggregates were formed. We observe that these morphologies result when solutions containing uncrystallized polymer are cooled. To obtain samples of uniform single crystals, we have used two-stage self seeding and solution replacement techniques.
