Undergraduate research at community colleges

This chapter illuminates the ways in which community colleges can develop and enhance their community-engaged scholarship (CES) to ensure they meet the needs of the local communities they are a part of. Indeed, community-engaged scholarship (CES) has been seen as a vehicle to support local communities by creating partnerships with postsecondary institutions to ensure research is conducted in a way that is mutually beneficial. The authors first explore the large corpus of literature regarding undergraduate research and then present a select number of community colleges that have been successful in incorporating undergraduate research projects. They then present how CES has been defined and how it has been implemented within a higher education context. They then proceed to introduce a CES conceptual model and explain how community colleges can utilize the model to support the institutionalization of CES programs. They conclude with recommendations for future research.

The Community College Undergraduate Research Experience Summit was a rare opportunity for educators from various STEM disciplines and a cross section of institutions to share their perspectives on efforts by two-year colleges to build, implement, and sustain undergraduate research experiences.

The Wyoming INBRE Community College network meets yearly to present research taking place throughout the state. The focus is on undergraduate research taking place at the community colleges throughout Wyoming. The students present on their individual projects and faculty present on their research and partnerships they have formed. This is also a time for students and faculty to collaborate on projects statewide.

Abstract Community colleges need more avenues for undergraduate research during their first two years in higher education but face challenges to building robust research namely the limited time frame students are at a community college and the limited resources for research. To maximize the limited resources and the educational experience for the students, multidisciplinary projects within the community college environment provide both engineering and science students with research opportunities that fit the schedule of a working student, allow interaction between disciplines, provide team-based environments, and foster life-long learning. This paper describes 1) a multidisciplinary project for honor chemistry and engineering students; introduction to engineering students and engineering graphics students in the development of a venipuncture practice arm for nursing students practicing venipuncture techniques in the simulation lab. 2) the institutional supports that promote the development of collaborative and multidisciplinary research projects and 3) recommendations for other community colleges interested in developing multidisciplinary research opportunities throughout their engineering and science curriculums.
