New selenides K2Sn2ZnSe6, Na2Ge2ZnSe6, and Na2In2GeSe6 exhibit diverse structures and Na2In2GeSe6 possesses a moderate second harmonic generation response.

The second harmonic generation (SHG) from alternate-layer Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of stilbazolium dyes and 4, 4'-dioctadecyl-3, 5, 3', 5'-tetramethyldipyrryl-methene hydrobromide increases as I 2ω(N) = l 2ω(1) N 2 for N ≥ 2 bilayers, but the equivalent monolayer signal ( I 2ω(1) ) is significantly less than the intensity from LB monolayers of the corresponding dye on glass. This is attributed, in part, to the different molecular tilts and, in part, to the position of the anion which influences the charge distribution within the chromophore. For alternate-layer films of E-N-octadecyl-4-[2-(4-dimethylaminophenyl)ethenyl]pyridinium octadecylsulphate (dye I) the second-order susceptibility and chromophore tilt angle are χ (2) zzz = 45 pm V -1 and ϕ = 30° respectively, whereas the methoxy congener, E-N-octadecyl-4-[2-(4-methoxyphenyl)ethenyl]pyridinium octadecylsulphate (dye II), has χ (2) zzz = 11 Pm V -1 and ϕ = 35°. The nonlinear optical properties of such films are dependent upon the compatibility of the dye and spacer.

Linear and nonlinear optical properties of the four isomorphic orthorhombic (point groupmm2) potassium rare earth nitrates K2[RE(NO3)5(H2O)2], with RE = La, Ce, Pr or Nd, have been investigated. Refractive indices in a wavelength range from 0.35 to 2.5 µm and the transmission spectra between 0.25 to 3.0 µm were measured. Using the Maker fringe technique, the d_{ijk}^{\rm\, SHG} coefficients of second-harmonic generation for a fundamental of the Nd–YAP laser (λ = 1079.5 nm) were determined for all four compounds. The d_{ijk}^{\rm\, SHG} coefficients of all four substances are about three times larger than those of KDP, as was first published by Ebberset al.[IEEE J. Quantum Electron.(1993),29, 497–507] for K2[La(NO3)5(H2O)2]. These nitrates are promising materials for application to nonlinear optics (e.g.second-harmonic generation of Nd laser radiation). The nonlinear optical properties of these compounds seem to have their origin mainly in the nitrate groups, as indicated by a simple model (summing the molecular hyperpolarizabilities of the NO3group). Neglecting local field effects, the hyperpolarizability of the NO3group was calculated as β222= 2.52 × 10−40 m4 V−1.

A significant enhancement of the second harmonic generation (SHG) from second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) dyes in solution has been evidenced when these dyes were grafted onto the surface of spherical gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), as compared to their NLO response without AuNPs. The length, as well as the nature of the spacers between the gold particle and the chromophore, is shown to play an important role, a benzene linker being more favorable to AuNP-4-dimethylamino-N-methyl-4-stilbazolium tosylate (DAST) interactions, as illustrated by a higher exaltation of the NLO response for DAST molecules linked to AuNP via a phenyl ring as compared to their equivalent with a CH2–CH2 link.
