A novel tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) promoted CH2-extrusion reaction of α-amino carbonyl compounds has been developed, which is driven by a demethylenation process to give various ring contraction products γ-lactams under radical conditions.

By the interaction of fluorine-substituted aromatic carbonyl compounds with tert-butyl hydroperoxide, hydroxyhydroperoxides were obtained whose non-fluorinated analogues were not obtained due to their instability. Synthesized peroxides are of interest as initiators of fluororubber structuring.

A general strategy for the synthesis of arylthio cyclopropyl carbaldehydes and ketones via acid catalysed arylthiol addition/ring contraction reaction sequence has been exploited. The procedure led to a wide panel of cyclopropyl carbonyl compounds in high yields and broad substrate scope.
