A 210 m section of Late Triassic Fleming Fjord Formation (the Malmros Klint Member and the lowermost 80m of the overlying Carlsberg Fjord beds of the Ørsted Dal Member) in the Tait Bjerg area of the Jameson Land Basin, East Greenland, was sampled for paleomagnetic study and measured for cycle stratigraphie analysis. Paleomagnetic samples were also taken from the underlying Gipsdalen Formation in the Gipsdalen area. A high stability characteristic magnetization carried by hematite was successfully isolated in 63 sampling levels in the Fleming Fjord Formation and 9 sampling sites in the Gipsdalen Formation using progressive thermal demagnetization. The mean characteristic directions for the Herning Fjord and the Gipsdalen Formations may be be biased by sedimentary inclination error but are consistent with a northward drift of East Greenland of about 10° from the arid (ca. 25° N) to semihumid (ca. 35° N) paleoclimatic belts in the Middle to Late Triassic. Seven normal and reversed polarity intervals are clearly delineated in the Fleming Fjord Formation section. A preferred correlation of the magnetostratigraphy to a cyclostratigraphically calibrated reference polarity sequence recently derived from drill cores in the Newark Basin of eastern North America suggests that the sampled interval represents about a 3.5 m.y. interval of the late Norian. The Malmros Klint Member and the overlying Carlsberg Fjord beds have composite sedimentary cycles that vary in thickness from 25 m to about 1 m and seem to match Milankovitch orbital climatic cyclicity with periods of ~400ky, ~100ky, ~40ky, and ~20ky. The composition and thickness ratio of the cycles suggest that the measured section of the Malmros Klint Member and the Carlsberg Fjord beds represents lacustrine accumulation over about 4 m.y., a duration consistent with the magnetostratigraphic correlations.

Abstract Metoposaurids are a widespread and ubiquitous constituent of Late Triassic non-marine paleoenvironments. In North America, this group is practically the only large-bodied temnospondyl clade, and is particularly well documented from the American southwest and south-central regions (Arizona, New Mexico, Texas). However, metoposaurids are poorly documented from eastern North America, with fragmentary, doubtfully diagnostic historical material such as “Dictyocephalus elegans” Leidy, 1856 and “Eupelor durus” Cope, 1866. The Zions View (early Norian?) locality in Pennsylvania preserves more-complete material, which previous workers noted as belonging to “Buettneria perfecta” Case, 1922 (=Anaschisma browni Branson, 1905). However, the material has never been described in a fashion that characterizes the anatomy or that justifies the taxonomic assignment, yet it would represent the most complete material in eastern North America and a substantial expansion of this taxon's geographic range. Here we redescribe the Zions View metoposaurid material in detail, differentiating it from Calamops paludosus Sinclair, 1917, the only other Late Triassic temnospondyl from the eastern seaboard, and demonstrating confident affinities with A. browni. Our study is the first to properly justify the taxonomic referral, underscoring the broader importance of proper documentation of voucher specimens, especially for potential geographic outliers. Anaschisma browni is thus the most widely dispersed metoposaurid. Its easternmost documentation underscores the importance of the undersampled and understudied metoposaurid record on the eastern seaboard for understanding the development of a metoposaurid zone of exclusivity in North America and demonstrates the need for further exploration to refine conceptualizations of Late Triassic tetrapod evolution.

ABSTRACTThe Newark-APTS established a high-resolution framework for the Late Triassic and Early Jurassic. Palaeomagnetic polarity correlations to marine sections show that stage-level correlations of continental sequences were off by as much as 10 million years. New U–Pb ages show the new correlations and the Newark basin astrochronology to be accurate. Correlation of Newark-APTS to the Chinle Formation/Dockum Group, Glen Canyon Group, Fleming Fjord Formation and Ischigualasto Formation led to the following conclusions: (1) there are no unequivocal Carnian-age dinosaurs; (2) the Norian Age was characterised by a slowly increasing saurischian diversity but no unequivocal ornithischians; (3) there was profound Norian and Rhaetian continental provinciality; (4) the classic Chinle-, Germanic- and Los Colorados-type assemblages may have persisted to the close of the Rhaetian; (5) the distinct genus-level biotic transition traditionally correlated with the marine Carnian–Norian is in fact mid-Norian in age and within published error of the Manicouagan impact; (6) the end-Triassic marine and continental extinctions as seen in eastern North America were contemporaneous; and (7) compared to Triassic communities, Hettangian and Sinemurian age terrestrial communities were nearly globally homogenous and of low diversity. Consequently, the complex emerging picture of dinosaur diversification demands biostratigraphically-independent geochronologies in each of the faunally-important regions.
