The article is devoted to calculations of load on rollers of a curvilinear continuous casting machine during bending of the ingot in the levelling section. The calculation takes into account the elastic and plastic characteristics of metal and the flexibility of the roller apparatus. Determination of load on rollers together with meeting other requirements such as reducing the cooling water consumption, minimizing the energy consumption enables optimizing the technology of slab cooling in the secondary cooling zone (SCZ) and obtaining metal of the required quality.

Проведен теоретический анализ процессов формирования литых заготовок при непрерывной разливке стали. На базе проведенного анализа разработана математическая модель для изучения термосиловых процессов, происходящих в кристаллизаторе и зоне вторичного охлаждения машины непрерывного литья заготовок (МНЛЗ). Методом математического моделирования определены параметры теплообмена и затвердевания исследуемых заготовок вдоль ее технологической оси. В качестве переменного параметра при формировании заготовок рассмотрена интенсивность теплоотвода в зоне вторичного охлаждения. Установлено, что математическое моделирование достаточно адекватно воспроизводит процессы формирования реальной непрерывнолитой заготовки, что позволяет рекомендовать предложенную модель для проведения исследований и оптимизации условий теплообмена в зоне вторичного охлаждения МНЛЗ. A theoretical analysis of the formation of castings in the continuous casting of steel. Based on the analysis, a mathematical model has been developed for the study of thermoforce processes occurring in the mold and the secondary cooling zone of a continuous casting machine (CCM). The parameters of heat transfer and solidification of the studied blanks along its technological axis are determined by the method of mathematical modeling. The intensity of the heat sink in the secondary cooling zone is considered as a variable parameter in the formation of blanks. It is established that mathematical modeling adequately reproduces the processes of formation of a real continuouscast billet, which allows us to recommend the proposed model for research and optimization of heat exchange conditions in the zone of secondary cooling of continuous casting machines.

Abstract This paper presents the findings of research conducted concerning the determination of thermal boundary conditions for the steel continuous casting process within the primary cooling zone. A cast slab - with dimensions of 1100 mm×220 mm - was analysed, and models described in references were compared with the authors’ model. The presented models were verified on the basis of an industrial database. The research problem was solved with the finite element method using the ProCAST software package.

The results of assessment of macrostructure and surface quality of round blooms 455 mm in diameter, cast on 4-strand continuous casting machine (CCM) at JSC “Ural Steel” are presented. The analysis of technological casting parameters of round blooms 455 mm in diameter (from steel grade “2”) at bloom caster of JSC “Ural Steel” are completed. Violations in casting temperature and rate parameters, which deteriorate thermal conditions of solidification and quality of continuous casting blooms, have been revealed. The main causes of unsatisfactory bloom quality have been determined, which are the increased overheating of cast metal and irrational secondary cooling mode. The results of the experiment to evaluate the surface temperature dynamics of a round bloom in the secondary cooling zone are presented, which confirmed the inefficiency of the secondary cooling mode for the defect-free bloom formation. As a result of thermal calculations of round blooms solidification of 455 mm in diameter, rational coolant flow rates by secondary cooling sections for bloom caster of JSC “Ural Steel” have been proposed. Optimized secondary cooling parameters provide a softer secondary cooling of the round bloom, which reduces the probability of the surface and internal defects development.

In order to more accurate simulation the solidification of billet continuous casting. The measured shell thickness and surface temperature have been used to revise the heat transfer model. The calculated results of the model are in excellent agreement with the experimental ones based on an actual casting machine. The revised model can excellent to simulate the billet solidification process. So it provides the possibility for better simulation the dynamic solidification process and optimizing of the secondary cooling water.
