Parallel measurements of 129I and 57Fe Mössbauer spectra have been performed on four members of the class of FeIII bis-dithiocarbamato iodides. Three out of the four studied compounds are found to order magnetically at temperatures below 4 K. Hyperfine parameters for 57Fe and 129I have been determined by computer fits of the spectra in the paramagnetic and magnetically ordered regions. The 129I results have been used to calculate covalency parameters of the Fe-I bond.

AbstractOlivine basalts from southern Egypt were studied by 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy at 297 and 77 K, and by optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The 57Fe Mössbauer spectra show three-magnetic sextets, three doublets of ferrous (Fe2+), and a weak ferric (Fe3+) doublet that is attributable to a nanophase oxide (npOx). The magnetic sextets relate to titanomagnetite and the Fe2+ doublets to olivine, pyroxene, and ulvöspinel. Variations in the hyperfine parameters of the various Fe components are attributed to changes in the local crystal chemistry. The intensity of oxidation (Fe3+/ΣFe) in the rocks varies from 20-27% with the oxidized iron largely residing in the titanomagnetite.

Mossbauer spectra of YC012B6 and NdCo12B6 doped with enriched 57Fe have been obtained at various temperatures between 42 K and room temperature. The spectrum of YC012B6 at 42 K indicates that the Co sublattice orders in the crystallographic basal plane. NdCo12B6 orders along or close to the crystallographic c-axis at 42 K and undergoes a spin-reorientation with increasing temperature until at ~55 K the magnetisation lies in or near the basal plane.
