Abstract Salicylic and benzoic acids can be separated on a ferric chloride-urea column. Salicylic acid is retained; benzoic acid is trapped on a Celite:1N sodium bicarbonate column; other phenolic compounds are eluted from both columns. Benzoic and salicylic acids are eluted from their respective columns with acetic acid in ether and chloroform.
