The purpose of this chapter is to contribute to a reflection on the emergence and evolution of information science, taking into consideration the context in which it is inserted. The information and knowledge society requires a science that studies the properties of information and the processes of its construction, communication, and use, based on the aggregation of existing literature. This chapter is a descriptive research, with the goal of identifying and characterizing the properties of information as an object of study of information sciences and the processes of its use as an industry. The structure of the chapter synthesizes the existing academic work, seeking to generate new knowledge. The results can be used to integrate the properties of the information in the different properties and/or areas of knowledge. The chapter seeks to firstly identify the properties and the apparent processes and then focuses in greater detail on some of them.

This article suggests attention to the paideia of the soul as an educative corrective for preparing open distance learning students for living in the current technology-dependent world. This world is undergirded by a technology-rich knowledge society that privileges new informational epistemologies. In an attempt to suggest a spirituality of open distance learning that is based on the paideia (full-blown completeness) of the soul, use is made of the integrated interpretations of three relevant viewpoints. It is shown that spirituality in open distance learning is neither religion nor ethics; that it is essentially about the meaning in and of life, meaning-making and meaning-decoding, self-transcendence (especially as meaning-making), connection, engagement and a re-interrogation of all the major existentialist questions. It is a journey towards wholeness and compassion (as knowledge of love) of every student teacher.

Public libraries play a crucial role in the information and knowledge society. Their access and services in the fourth industrial revolution require review as well as the knowledge of the competency requirements for Library and Information Science (LIS) graduates to offer professional services. This paper presents the competencies LIS graduates require for work. It also seeks to examine the challenges they encounter in public libraries. The study is driven by the notion that a skills gap and a lack of training for LIS professionals are still daunting challenges in most public libraries. The post-positivism paradigm was employed through the triangulation of both qualitative and quantitative methodologies in data collection and analysis. Content analysis and a survey were employed as research methods. The study scanned job advertisements in four newspapers spanning a three-year period (from January 2015 to December 2017). Semi-structured interviews were conducted with assistant directors and structured questionnaires were administered to LIS graduates. Grade 12, one to three years of work experience, computer literacy and communication skills are the most required competencies to work at public libraries. There seems to be no balance between theory and practice offered in most LIS schools, which suggests the need for curricula revision. Employed LIS graduates are facing several challenges, which include lack of practical exposure or knowledge, lack of qualification recognition and individual promotions, and lack of ICT skills and knowledge.

The author proves in the article that Russia has certain chances for a way out of the present contradictions to the development path which is adequate to the challenges of the knowledge revolution and the global problems, to the system of the organization of production and social relations which can provide a priority of public creativity and culture, free harmonious development of the personality. This is the strategy of the global cultural leadership and this is the alternative to imperial ambitions which are popular today and which are bringing to a dead-lock of “Peripheral petty-Empire”.
